These sizes refer to how big around the barrel is .... 12 gauge is pretty standard but the smaller the number the bigger the gun ... there have been shotguns made up to 2 and 4 gauge in size that were used to hunt elephant in times past.

they have distinctive makes use of, yet they are able to be very interchangable. maximum folk use a 12 or 20 for many of their searching with a shotgun becuase the ten and sixteen are uncommon and the shot trend on a 410 isnt very good as a results of fact maximum are finished choke which holds the trend from spreading like it may with flying birds. The doves and quail, pheasent are all hunted with 12s and 20's and the goose and ducks are additionally many times hunted with 12's and 20's. the ten and sixteen Gauge dont get hutned with too usually yet some hunt turkey with a 10 becase it may carry larger shells which will deliver out greater pellets right into a kill zone. The .410 is actaully no longer the gauge of the shotgun, the gauge is like sixty seven and a million/3 of a few thing like that. It gets talked approximately as the 410 as a results of fact its less difficult to assert than im gonna get out my sixty seven and a million/3 gauge and bypass shoot some in spite of. It doesnt get used too usually whilst poultry searching as a results of fact like i stated, the trend isnt the final available. like countless the different gauges, it shoots slugs and that they do get used for slugs. I shoot coyotes with slugs yet no longer too usually as a results of fact a have a rifle for that. some states in basic terms enable shtoguns with slugs, like my state, so I could desire to seek deer with a 12 gauge. i'm hoping i write that so which you would be able to realize it precise!

There are gauges down to 2 gauge, but these were mounted on a swivel on a boat and used to take down a whole flock in one shot.

I've heard of an 8 ga., don't know what you'd shoot with that, too big. 10 ga. is too big for Pheasant. 12 ga. is typical with bird shot. 16 ga. is probably out of production. 20 ga. is considered small.
