put conditioner on dry hair then use a nit comb to get out the lice.
you will have to kill the nits after they are removed, just wipe comb onto some kitchen roll and then just fold it over and use whatever you feel comfortable with using to squash them!! not the most pleasant way but cheap and it works!!

Baby oil may work for smothering the lice, but it wont kill the eggs.. so in a few days you'll have the same problem over again. I wasn't aware the over the counter stuff cost that much.. and really, it's worth finding the money.
You have to go thru the hair w/the comb in small sections just to make sure there aren't any bugs on the head, even if you think you've smothered them.
If you have a very hot (I mean professional hot) curling iron, in a small barrel.. take paper thin sections of hair with the curling iron on the hottest setting, starting as close to the scalp as possible and slowly drag it down to the ends. You will hear the eggs literally frying off.
The most important thing you can do when someone is infected with lice is to treat them, treat yourself, treat everyone in the house, and get all the kids out. Put a plastic bag on your head and start cleaning. Clean the carpet, clean all the sheets in hot water, put all the stuffed animals and pillows in plastic bags and seal them tightly to sufficate the lice (they need air and blood to live). Clean your car. Clean the carpet in your car and the seats if they are cloth. Otherwise, you will get in the car and the lice will jump on your head. Wash any clothing that could even possibly be contaminated. Most reoccuring cases of lice is because someone forgot to clean something.
Use hairspray or gel or some other product in your hair and your children's hair every day. Much to the disbelief of most people.. lice is not a dirty person's disease.. its a clean person's disease. They can't attach nits to dirty hair.

this may sound not proper
but i am a healthcare professional and i know what i am talking about
this is a method used in developing countries
equal parts of kerosene and coconut oil is applied and left for about 1 hour minimum , then take a thorough bath starting with washing ur hair first
the next important thing is that the linen should be washed and if possible soaked in a disinfectant
next thing is that since all disinfectant even the one available in the market which has { benzene hexachloride} are not effective against the nits or the eggs so this procedure should be repeated after one week when the nits become lice

Mayonnaise. Glop it all over the hair - pretty thick. Then put on a plastic shower cap. It's so thick, they'll suffocate. After a couple of hours, wash the hair, then, and this is the MOST IMPORTANT STEP - comb out ALL the nits and dead lice. If you even leave one nit, you'll have to do this ALL OVER. If the comb isn't fine enough to pull out the nits, use your fingernails.
Also, wash any bedding, pillows, etc. in the hottest water the fabric will allow. Wash hats. Wash combs/brushes/hair accessories too. Vaccum EVERYTHING - chairs, couch, bed, even the car seats. Those little buggers can be ANYWHERE.
Good luck!!!

This is what I suggested 3 days ago:
Rosemary essential oil. One drop in a dollop of your usual shampoo, sit in the suds for 5 minutes, then condition in the same way using a nit comb to remove the beasties.
After drying the hair, put a drop of rosemary oil in the hair behind each ear.
Should see results very quickly. Even when nit-free, do this once a week.
No more nits.

lice thrives in clean hair
a friend told me the way she got rid of her daughters lice was putting vaseline on the scalp and covering with plastic. The oils prevent the lice survival - keep it on for at least and hour.
Your next job will be getting the vaseline out - try Dawn dishwashing liquid or a baking soda/shampoo concoction.
Be sure and wash your sheets, towels - anything your hair has come in contact with, on the hottest water possible and use bleach if you can. I would also treat your pillow and matress with a serious bacteria killer
Good luck with this - I know it's frustrating

products like Goo-lengthy gone and Goof-off (accessible at hardware shops) artwork particularly properly, yet they're particularly extreme priced for a small quantity. For an basic living house therapy attempt some spray on Oven purifier. This became a way counseled to me by technique of an proprietor of a body save. it is what they use to take sticky stuff and former decals off of autos.

when i was younger, my mum put tea tree shampoo and conditioner in my hair and then dragged the little buggers out with a metal comb. i still hate her for that form of child abuse lol i think it worked though cos i only remember that happening to me once but thats possibly because after the incident she used to scrape my hair back to the point where my face looked like i had a botched facelift and 4 shots of botox anyway it worked thats all i know.
