I suggest you have a bright light on the handlebar AND your helmet...
It is a little scary your first few times out, but you will enjoy it the more you do it!

Better to ride with a group on a trail or area that you don't know. If you know the trail, then go for it alone.
Have fun!

I do it all the time but I recommend a few things:
1) Get a headlight for the front of your bike... its illegal to not have one at night where I live.
2) Bright reflective clothes so that drivers can see you.
3) Not necessary, but it is nice to have a back light. I have one that is red, and it is helpful for drivers to see you while behind you.
4) Use caution. Like driving a car at night, you have to be more aware of your surroundings and other vehicles.
5) Follow the rules of the road! Don't go in the opposite lane, or go on and off the sidewalk as you please. Stay on the road and follow the proper procedures.

If you use those tips you'll be fine. Good luck!

Look out toward the outer edge of your lights reach so that you can be prepared for what might be coming. You will have a tendancy to look at the center of your light beam (where it is brightest), but that won't give you enough time to ready yourself for what's coming ahead.
It's a good idea to have a Low and High Beam setup together so that you can not only see what is directly ahead, but also to the sides of you as well.
But the single best investment you can make would be a helmet mounted light. This way, wherever you look, you will be able to at least see SOMETHING!

Hope this helps!

Everything seems a lot faster!

You'll be crawling along and think your going warp speed.

Only if you have headlights coming towards you and then you can't see the road if there is no stripes.
