to the person that said - they dont try to push their values onto the westerners. it's all in your head.

Today there was a leaflet stuck on a lampost saying British Values - gambling, casual sex, drinking VS Muslim Values - marriage, prayer, work, so its not all in my head idiot.

are you Christian? because Christian people do A LOT more pushing then anyone else... Christian feel like they must convert everyone.. and it gets annoying.. no one should have to ask or tell a person to convert.. if they want to then they will on their own.. i havent seen to many Muslims trying to convert me but i would tell them the same thing i tell Christians.. Buddhism is better =)

I too don't understand the comment "are values onto the citizens of this country". Could you mean "their values"?

Anyway, I believe you're making two generalizations that I'm not sure are supported in fact. First, do ALL Muslims come to the West to escape oppression, or are there other reasons, such as education, economic advantages, career goals, etc.? Second, do they ALL try to "push what they think"?

And a third point: while it's quite possible the some Muslims come to the West to escape oppression, and some Muslims may have an agenda and "push what they think", there's no logical reason to assume that the ones who are escaping oppression are the same ones who try to force their values onto everyone.

Personally, in my job in a public library, I come into contact with people from many different cultures and religions - Hindus, Muslims, Jews, born-again Christians; whites, blacks, Asians; new immigrants and people whose families have lived in the area for generations - and I've never felt in the slightest that anyone is trying to force their ideas onto anyone else.

That's just my experience. I assume from your question that you have had the opposite experience. Do you live in a neighborhood with a large and growing Muslim population?

If I may make a suggestion: rethink your question, take out the over-generalizations, and ask it again.

There are going to be people of EVERY religion or sect that try to push their beliefs on others. They do so because they feel so strongly that their way is the only way. The fact is, none of us really knows which way is exactly right. We just have to believe how we feel and hope we get the result we want. But as for Muslims (or any other religion) all trying to push their values and beliefs on us, I think that's a generalization (stereotype), and is not necessarily true. My best friend for the last 10 years is Muslim, came from Iran when she was 7 or so. She said nothing about her religion unless I or someone else asked her. I'm Christian, and wanted to know more, so we shared with each other on these points. She gave up quite a few of her family's strong beliefs to fit in more here, and her family never had a problem with it. I did some things to fit in with her family. There was never any harsh feelings there though. We knew we were different and we accepted it and never tried to push anything on the other person. It just seems as though they are all doing it because the louder ones are the ones that are heard more clearly. Ever heard the expression, "The squeaky wheel gets the grease"? Well, that's how it is in our world. The loudest, most obnoxious people get the attention. While everyone else just lives their lives peacefully.

Generally people immigrate for economic opportunity, not necessarily secularism. A book I scanned over about Muslim immigrants in Canada talked about Muslims wanting to be judged under sharia law there, and here in the U.S. the most extreme example I've seen is a woman wanting to wear her veil in a driver's licence photo (she was forced to take it off). But as for pushing values on others, why don't you ask the (U.S.) Christian right about that? A certain recent veto in the news comes to mind as an example. That, to me, has more effect on my life than any leaflet you might have seen on a lamppost.

I understand your question and it's a damn good question. I think a lot of prejudice comes from this exact ideal in our society and your question can apply to every culture; this is what makes America great, it doesn't matter where you are from and what culture you bring; hence the "melting pot" theme.

I think however, your question is more directed towards the Muslim-right.

You have to remember that the face of America comes from it's president and pop culture; what the magazine covers here show is what people see outside and it's what they think America is; do you think every girl has Britney Spear's pre-baby body? Some people actually think that.

Muslims come to the US to stay away from the extremist right; the violent side of the muslim culture. Unfortunately, those same extremists came to the US under the guise that they were more left wing trying to destroy a culture that is not their own.

Why did Christians come to the US to escape oppression and then try and push what they thought onto the original residents of this country? Mostly because people can't help themselves. If they aren't pushing their religious beliefs, they're pushing a political agenda, or some other crap.

They try to push there values onto us because they still believe unconsciuosly maybe that we are Infidels and we need to be saved or killed. Though the immagrants mostly want to save us.

In my opinion if you come across someone like that, you should ask them politly to not do that and tell them that you will not do that to them. As to why you think they do that, it might just be that they are not used to the way of life here but the way of life they originally had is changing so drastically that they are trying to make their new home like their old home used to be if you know what I'm saying.

They can push all they want. The difference in the western world is that non-muslims push back.
