First thing you should have alot of land at least .25 acres. They can run pretty high depending on the distributer. They work by giving the dog a mild but effective shock in the neck (not enough to really hurt the dog.) which detures them from going outside of the perimeter. They generally have about 1 to 2 feet of perimeter so if the dog ventures he won't walk right through the "shock zone". As for reliability the batteries for the collar are very small and won't run out too fast since the shock is mild. I do not know if the perimeter is connected directly to your electricity or not. Check out Dr. Fosters & Smith they have a website & free catalogs. They cater to people who have all types of animals. Good Luck

1) yes they work! 2) yes they can be abused or negated! So ask yourself... am I letting the dog make the decision or am I ? You would not want a 3yoa toddler crawling thru the petdoor and being out unsuprvised so why allow your pet the same harmful respect? These invisible fences come with variable controls; for instance, maybe you have a garden away from the building that your canine digs in zap at maximum 10' away from temptation for the first 72 hours then reduce shock level for 48 hours, reset to 5' distance now which will remain for three weeks. . . vary the shock between max. and half-zap during this period. Upon dogs reaction(yelp) holler "NO!" for the entire 3weeks!
Is expensive? Most start at $150 then get $$$ with ancillary pieces. Pet worth?? to you?

I had bought an underground fence for my two dogs, we paid big bucks for double collars and what was supposed to be a stronger current because of them being large breed dogs. Our lab was smart and seemed after the first time of being shocked to stay easily with in his limits. (after this training we moved and just walked him around the boarder of our new yard and have not had him leave once!!) however, our St. Bernard, he is sooo bull headed. Not sure if he couldn't feel it with all his fat or if he just ignored it, but it did not work at all. he's a smart dog, but has a short attention spand. If he wants to go meet the neighbor or the people at the business crossed the street he is going, shock collar or not!!

I love ours! They work really good , you just have to adjust the settings for your dog. They work by ... your dog has a transmitter on it's collar and if it goes beyond the boundaries of the underground fence it gives them a Little shock. But you train them first on a leash so they know where to go and where not to. Once they are trained they stay within their boundaries! i hope this helped.

They do not work for many dogs who will learn to just run through it fast. They also do not keep other dogs out. Do not think your dog is securely contained with one.
I hate those things, a total waste of money! Buy a real fence.

I had one many years ago for my yellow lab. She would often just run right through the shock and it would stop when she was out of range, so it didn't work that well for us. But, we could have trained her a little better on it too. They've probably improved sense, but I think with training they can be pretty effective.

I think you're talking about those shock collars. I hear that they do work..... but why not just train your dog? Dogs need a master, and have to be told what to do.
