Hi one site where you get good information on accommodation in Thailand is www.asiarooms.com. This site gives you the lowdown on the hotel, pictures, map as well as your expected rate. If there are promotions, those offering special price are flagged for your easy reference. Have a look at the site and see for yourself.
If you plan to stay and move around Bangkok, being near the Skytrain or the subway train MRT will be good. This is because of the heavy congested traffic on the roads most times. The train will provide fast access to most places, especially if you are into shopping. Both trains go to the Chatuchak Weekend Market, though there are a couple more places around now to visit even on weekdays. Likewise the BTS Skytrain will bring you to the main shopping places like Mahboon Krong (MBK) Centre, Siam Paragon, Siam Centre, Central Plaza Childlom and Silom, E Emporium, as well as Gaysorn and Central World Plaza (ex-World Trade Centre) These are all good shoppping sites.
So you will be looking for hotels along Sukhumvit Road, Silom Road, Ratchthevi Road You have lots of choices on Sukhumvit. Varying from 3 to 5 star-standard. Notables will be JW Marriot, Grand Hyatt Erawan, The Landmark Hotel, Four Seasons Hotel, Novotel Lotus Hotel, Conrad Hotel, Cheaper options will include Ambassador Hotel, . Fact is there are many in that area.
At Ratchathevi, look for Pathumwan Princess Hotel. Silom Dusit Thani Hotel.
These are all 5 stars hotels. Best to check the site. Pick one that match your budget. Have fun. It is quite safe there., just avoid Patpong which is at Sala Daend Skytrain Station vicinity in Silom.
Have fun. You can contact me if you like more info.

Booking a Bangkok hotel on line over the Internet through a hotel booking service such as www.hoteltravel.com will cost you much less than booking the same hotel directly (Go Figure). If you have never been to Thailand before I suggest using a tour agency such as Grand Circle Travel, They offer excellent hotels, airfare, ground transportation and most meals for only a few hundred dollars more than just airfare from the USA. If money is no object and you are close to JFK Thai Air has direct flights to Bangkok. Foreign women traveling alone (not with a group) in Thailand are rare but you should feel very safe. Don't accept unsolicited tours or shopping recommendations from strangers even other Americans.

You could try Sofitel Central Plaza, a very nice hotel, five star category...
or Century Park Hotel that is a four star hotel... When I looked for a place to stay in Bangkok, I used www.indexofhotels.com/city-Bangkok-Bangkok.htm, because they have many hotels listed there with contact information (including website, if the hotels has one, where you can see how the hotel looks from inside and outside). And after you make a decision, you can call the hotel staff, ask about prices, make reservation...

Many hotels in Bangkok are safe and comfortable for 2 girls. You can go visit many website like www.bangkok.com, www.bangkok-hotel.net and www.hotelthailand.com/bangkok/bangkok.html.
And I suggest you that you should stay in the crowded places like Silom Road, Sukhumvit Road and Khaosan Road. All of them are the famous places for foreigners.

Bangkok is pretty safe, normal precautions but not to worry too much.. It is a sprawling city with not one particular "center" - but if you stay somewhere along the skytrain line [ BTS ] you should be fine.. Silom Rd Area, Sukhumvit Rd Area [ lower numbered streets are the foreign district w/lots of restaurants etc. ] -- lots of nice hotels - you'll be fine.. enjoy your trip

Hotel Intercontinental in Chitlom... It's right next to Gaysorn, walking distance to Siam Square, Siam Paragon, and the train.
If you want something more affordable, you can try Holiday Inn which is right next/connected to the Intercon.
Have fun!
