How can you tell from the outside if a water melon is sweet or not?

Does the skin have to be a certain colour?
Can you give me any advice on how to get a sweet water melon?

Try squeezing the end where the stem was, if it is soft the melon is ripe thus should be sweet!

I just asked this same question to a farmer that grows and sells watermelons at my local farmer's market last week...he told me that the darker the outside of the melon is, the sweeter it is. I got a really dark one and it was pretty sweet. Yummy!

I lightly slap the outside of several to listen for the sound it makes. The ones that make a hollow sound and feel are usually nice and sweet. I guess it is from having much more water than flesh when it is ripened. Think of filling a drum or bucket with water and the sound, and feel, it would make when lightly slapped. I know it sounds silly, but It works for me. Experiment with it a little and see if it works for you.

scratch it it peels easy.the vains are swalen if you feel it.the stalk come of the top if you pull it. but the best one is to cut a smal triangular window and look and taste.if you dont like simple put back the cover.
anyway buy greek ones they sweeter and taster.thats for water melons.the honey melon is soft at the bottom and smells nice.

u can't just thump the melon with your finger. the deeper the thump sounds the sweeter the melon
