Windows version 1-3, Windows 9X, Windows ME are all DOS based programs that emulate a windowing operating system. All are time slice based and not true multi-tasking operating systems.

Windows NT Version 1-4 is a true 32-bit multi-tasking operating system. It uses a Kernal and implemented a HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) to isolate the low level hardware calls from the Kernal and OS. That is why many DOS and Windows programs would not run on NT. Many of those old programs manipulated the hardware by making low level BIOS calls which are blocked/forbidden by NT.

Windows XP, Server 2003 and others are all others are based on NT. XP is refered to as NT V5.0. Server 2003 and XP-64 are the only 64 bit OS released to date by MS.

In our local newspaper just this week, it was stated that MS will no longer support Win 98, ME. No more fixes. Win Vista is expected in a few months. If you plan on going on the internet, you had better use WinXP and up. I have two computers with Win98, which would cost too much to upgrade, and are taking up space.

Type "Differences of Windows" or something like that in the box of the search site as Yahoo, Google, etc. and you'll get what you want more than you need!
