This is not a crude remark, but a valid observation. American MEN AND WOMEN ARE amongst the fattest in the world. It's FACT. Sure, not EVERY American woman is fatter then EVERY foriegner, but facts ARE facts. Don't be so offended by the truth. Just because a few American celebrities who constantly are in the media have anorexia does NOT mean anything. Anyone who actually reads the newspaper, should know this to be true. My guess is the people who are denying this fact are either children/teens who don't care about the news, or uneducated adults who just don't want it to be fact. Please, take 2 minutes of your time to google this information before you get so offeneded. THIS IS ONE OF AMERICA'S BIGGEST PROBLEMS, AND IS BECOMING AN EPIDEMIC. America's average life expectancy is dropping, and will plummet after the baby boomers die. This is all fact people.
Why is America so fat?
- In America, unhealthy food is MUCH cheaper then healthy food
- We are a work-oriented society, where time has made us rely more and more on fast food/junk food/vending machine food
- We are constantly bombarded with junk food ads
- American fast food has less healthy substituion, in other countries you can get salad, soup, yogurt, etc as a side dish instead of fries, this is less common in the US
- Portion sizes are out of control, in other countries our small may be their large in terms of portion, or, at least a medium
- We have more fast food locations then any other country
- Americans are less likely to eat meals as a family
- Kids/teens are more likely to take care of their own meals, by heating up canned food, or eating fast food, or pizza pockets, etc.
- We grow up thinking McDonalds is a treat, whereas in say, Europe, families view such places as a less attractive alternative
- We reward our kids with food
- Food in America is less healthy
- We don't have the same time we used to, American culture is work-oriented which leaves little time for meal preparation/going to gym
- We can be lazy
- Our kids would rather play video games and watch TV then get exercise
-Families do less together, which is cause for point above
- We have the most innovative and successful fast food and candy companies and marketers in the world
THE BEST WAY TO CHANGE THINGS IS TO STOP DENYING THE PROBLEM AND FIX IT.

Hey everyone, I think common sense would tell you that this is a generalization and not meaning that EVERY woman is fat.
HOWEVER, if you have ever paid any attention to statistics then you would know that Americans are FAT! (but so are many other countries) 57% of adult Americans are considered to be overweight and these rates keep going up. So whether it is from the fast food industry, lack of food insecurity, or people just like to eat a lot, North Americans in general are fat....it's not rude, it's just the truth.

I don't think young american women look so fat; it has a lot to do with diet and culture; in the middle east for example, you won't find many overweight women and the same goes for the east; in america, the lifestyle dictates quick and easy, for example, fast food, which is cooked in a deep fryer which adds an enormous amount to the fat content.
Also, people are bombarded with commercials to eat this or that; the problem is that the commercials, even the ones advocating healthy foods, are not necessarily healthy; it's a horrible marketing ploy instituted by the companies.

lol @ carmellavella -- you tell it.
I am not sure where you looked, but I find it quite the contrary. So many women are overly concerned with their weight, I see most *young* women (I'm talking at oldest, mid 20's) as being too thin. So, perhaps your perception is somehow flawed when it comes to this age group. Americans have too much food, and too little exercise due to technology, which is why we have an obesity problem. I do believe it is serious, and I don't think it should be joked about in this forum.
So, maybe "look so fat" is in the eye of the beholder?

Have you looked at a teen magazine lately?? How much skinnier can lindsay lohan, nicole richie, olsen twins, etc get??
I work in the school system and fat is NOT what you'd call the average American girl. However, we may look heavier & "healthier" than females in other countries, but that's just because we have the money to choose to eat whatever & wherever we want.

I am not from USA but I have been there and it is indeed appalling. I agree with what you say. Many people do not realize this but the average American woman is way overweight. Many consider MacDonald's to be healthy. They do not have their own kitchen and are not taught how to exercise properly. You can see from most people's answer that they do not realize it. They think it is "healthy". In Cyprus, where I come from size medium is smaller than America's extra small. I had trouble in finding clothes there, because sometimes size 0 was big! I am 1.63(5.4) and weight 47kg (100 pounds). That is considered the average in my country.

Most of them are fat. Even though they are not so bad as the older married women. That's when it gets really bad.
Yeah , I know it is disgusting how they walk around showing their bellies in their short shirts . Who would want to see that belly hanging out ?
They look fat , because they are fat. It's as simple as that. They don't exercise and they over eat all the junk food they can get their hands on.
