Oh, that's right. There were these god-squad kids in my high school who speak in tongues during math class. All the other jesus freaks would crowd around and chant 'hallelujah' while the teacher looked on in horror. You christians and your spooky voodoo religion.

Chanting in class, how creepy yet amusing. I hope you ridiculed them.
Christianity, like all organized religion, is a joke. They love to wear it on their sleeve.

Dear RAPTUREFISH: speaking in tongues is simply weird, and a wonderful way to attract attention to oneself.. Grow up.

To blaspheme against the Holy Spirit is the only unforgivable sin. What this means, I believe, is that when Jesus came he came to give people a new promise.
The old promise was when the Law was given to Moses and people were shown what God's standard of right being and living is. However, the Law didn't save people - only people who could meet the Law's requirements throughout their whole lives and never sin could be able to meet God's standard - it only showed how far we fall short. No-one could be sinless and be able to have a place in heaven with God.
The new promise was this - instead of having an external law that people were unable to meet, Jesus decided he would take on the punishment of our sin and pay the price - to die. And we take his place - as people who have no sin, who are covered by the blood price of Jesus. Since no-one could earn heaven, Jesus instead qualified us to be in heaven by paying the price of taking our place and dying.
Now Jesus came back to life, and so anyone who chooses Jesus' gift of salvation is grace or gifted with new life. The law is not external anymore, but anyone who accepts Jesus dies to themselves and has a new life in them - Jesus' spirit, the Holy Spirit. The law now becomes written on people's hearts - people are changed and they have a new life that desires to follow the law.
So blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is when anyone rejects this gift - the last and best chance for a wonderful new life in heaven - and anyone who does decides to reject the last lifeline of God.
As for the other questions - well, yes, tongues are weird to anyone who doesn't know enough about them, even some christians who don't believe in them - but you have to have an open mind and ask people about them, it's really a gift of God to people for them to pray, worship and be built up to be empowered to live the christian life. It's not voodoo, it's nothing dark or evil at all, it's God - it's an answer to when a person is empty in spirit, God enables them to be filled with his power in them when a person prays or speaks in tongues. There are other ways too, but it's really something unique and actually a good thing. Ask your students next time with a mindset to learn and not judge.
cheers,

Part of the trinity, father, son, holy spirit. Then they say they are monotheists. That makes a lot of sense.
