Planning a trip, actually for business, my girlfriend is going to be joining me, and I want to surprise propose to her while we are there. I was looking for a unique or romantic spot to propose to her while in D.C.

I am going to back the initial suggestion of the top of the Kennedy Center. It is open at night, though I am not sure how late, and is free to the public. It gives a great view of the Potomac, the Lincoln and DC as a whole. In a matter of fact, it is one of the best views of the city. But more importantly, its private. Very few people are up there, especially at night, at it is rare to see another couple, especially on a weeknight. It remains my girlfriends favorite spot in the city. Alternatives include the Lincoln memorial, which is fairly crowed, at pretty much any hour. Also, around the tidal basin, close to the FDR memorial. However, this area is nice, and can be romantic during the day, it is kind of spooky at night. The National Cathedral is very beautiful and if you are religious this can be a nice spot. But be forewarned, they are currently doing construction around there, so I am not sure how it looks right now. I think it depends on the time of day, privacy, whether over food, and other factors what will work out for you, but I hope this helps.
Wish you luck and Congrats!

I think I'll vote for Lincoln Memorial as well, mostly because it's my favorite. Or, if she has a particular favorite spot in DC propose to her there. See if you can get arrangments for a dinner cruise down the Potomac & propose on the top deck (it's gorgeous up there). Try to get a night that's going to be less crowded if you do 'cause that might take away from the mood with a bizillion people on there. Good luck & hope she says yes wherever you propose!

The Windows on Washington restaurant and SkyDome lounge at the Doubletree Hotel in Crystal City provide excellent views of the mall and memorials. You could propose over dinner, but the timing is up to you.

Really depends on your interests. If she's into Horror movies, maybe you want to do it on the Exorcist Stairs in Georgetown.

Personally, I think one of the coolest places is the Bell Tower in the Old Post Office Pavillion. It's the only place that you can get a nighttime view of the entire Mall area up close.

try the Lincoln memorial. The pool in front of it is beautiful at night, and you can see the Washington memorial. Also proposing there near the Lincoln memorial means that you are telling her the truth that you really want to propose.

The area around the tidal basin in the evening is very nice. The Jefferson and FDR memorials are both in that area and very nice. The sculpture gardens outside the National Gallery and the Hirschorn museums are very nice as well.

I would suggest the Jefferson Memorial. The Tidal Basin is really beautiful at night, great backdrop.

The Lincoln Memorial is under construction right now.

The bell tower of the National Cathedral. Check with the staff before you go to make sure they'll let you. My girlfriend got her proposal there. But her fiance checked ahead.
