I've heard the term referring to actual people today and in reference to English. If anyone is willing to explain this, I would appreciate it.

A Deist is a person who believes that God created the world and is now just sitting back and watching, not taking any active part in world today. Some of the Founding Fathers, Jefferson & Madison, were Deists.

Thomas Jefferson was a Deist. He believed that God was like a Great Clockmaker, who created the universe, then went away, which would explain both the apparently miraculous harmony of the natural world as well as God's silence and non-interference with mortal matters.

a deist is someone who believes there is a god, but does not believe a particular religion. they believe that a god created the universe, but does not interfere with it on a daily basis.
