From being on this site, I have found a big majority of people cannot form a complete or comprehensible sentence, spelling is horrid. How do the illiterate progress to the next grade without the teachers stepping in? Lord knows it can't all be blamed on typing mistakes!

The kids here are just lazy. From what I see, the more kids that talk in slang and type horribly don't care about school and care more on socializing. Kids that are typing horribly are beyond what teachers can discipline and teach. Therefore, the easiest way of learning and teaching is to give them a poor grade and give them a hard time later in life. I think it's more of the parents fault for not reinforcing education or caring.

Yes. As my mom, a college professor, put it "the K-12 education system is broken, and no one knows how to fix it."

There's many a teacher out there who just doesn't care. They're in it for the vacations or whatever. Once they get tenure, it's even worse. A student of my mother's brought her a tape of a lecture from another teacher at the college, on it, he said "I have tenure, so I can do what I want, and there isn't a thing any of you can do about it!" WTF kind of attitude is THAT? I think that if they have to re-apply for tenure every three or five years, it might light a fire under them because it would SUCK to have to look for a new job and start all over after a few years!

When I was in elementary school, whenever the teacher sent home notes, my father would get a red pen, correct the spelling and/or grammar, and send it back. (Good thing I'm freakin' brilliant, or else God only knows what would've happened in THAT school system! LOL!!!!)

The other thing I've seen a lot of is if a child is smart and doesn't want to conform to the classroom, the teachers try to get them classified ADD so that Ritalin will settle them down, instead of trying to find some kind of work that will hold their interest. This happened to my brother - in first grade, he finished ALL the first grade work, and half of the second grade curriculm, so he and a friend sat in the back of the classroom quietly discussing their theories about the Bermuda Triangle. How many six year olds even KNOW what that is? The teacher tried to tell my parents he wasn't ready for second grade and to hold him back.

As an aside - my mom made a joke about "where's Jimmy Hoffa?" in her class last semester, and no one in the class knew who he was!!!

The spelling is inexcusable. USE THE FREAKING SPELL CHECK!

The incomplete sentences and such are due to several factors... some of the users are very young and accustomed to using abbreviations via chat and e-mail... there are users who speak limited English... some of it is certainly due to firing off answers and questions without proof-reading. However, a lot of schools do seem to care more about statistics and standardized testing than anything else. I guess we can only hope that if we complain about it enough some of these people will pick up a book on grammar or practice their written communication skills. Sadly most are probably more interested in speaking their mind than improving it.

I'm a substitute teach and it is horrid. There are kids in high school that can't read and they are being passed on like it's nothing. It's not the child's fault, there need to be more programs and help for that kind of thing. But, yet, education starts at home!
It is the parents responsibility to make sure the child is "ready" for school. If they are behind in Kindergarten, It is tremendously hard for them to ever catch up.

What are the parents doing to help their kids when they get home? It's not just on the schools. Parents can help their kids and if the child is not ready for the next grade the parent has the power to hold their child back. Teacher's these days are dealing with larger class sizes and no time for one on one help like they use to. And, with this "No kid left behind" policy these days what can a teaher do. Parents need to step in and up.

The web is a place for us to just relax and take a break from the world...Its like a detente for many of us..Why do we need to have perfect grammar on the web...Im a A student in english, but I still create short cuts here and there when Im chatting or responding to questions on sites such as this one.Are we writing formal letters??? Why dont you worry about more serious issues , such as, unnecessary death, pain, hunger, abuse...etc?? Give me a break...

It's not the schools. It's the individuals who are responsible. Stop trying to cast the blame somewhere else. I am sure the kids got their papers corrected, but they never paid attention to the errors. Let the losers take accountability for their own shortcomings instead of trying to blame their folks or some institution!

I agree with you but sometimes how kids behave and learn have to do alot with their home environment. The public schools are more worried about the "so-called" TAKS test that they tend to divert from the one to one contact with the students. My son is in a public and I really wish I could put him in a private school, but it is too expensive. I know he would do better in a private school because they tend to focus more on the how the kids are doing then the "TAKS" test. I must say that our tax dollars are not going into good use.

certain, the established public college equipment is in undesirable structure, yet no longer all because the instructors and directors are inept. they only do not get a probability to do their jobs. the instructors are also nurses, therapists, disciplinarians, etc. they only get to truly "coach" about 30% of the time. Too many mum and dad have abdicated their duty to develop their children to the colleges. i think, notwithstanding, that the major reason the established public college equipment graduates illiterate scholars thoroughly unprepared for faculty, is that the top clientele (agency, the protection rigidity, market, society typically) is only superb with the outcomes. because the known factor of coaching will develop, expectancies of the graduates to discover severe paying, priceless jobs also will develop. those jobs only do no longer exist.
