Personally, I think that a girl who's able to be your best friend would also make the best lifelong partner. (Yes, I'm a boy. Haha. So let there be no misunderstandings.)
My current, first, and only girlfriend has been my best friend since we were 12 :-)
I dare say we're on better terms than most couples. We definitely trust each other more.
And what's more, we have much better ways of enjoying each other's company than sex. After 6 years together as best friends and then a couple, both of us are still virgins. Now, isn't this a shocker in the infamous Dating section of Yahoo Answers? (jk jk :p) But really, I'm happy that we're together because we love and understand each other, and not because of any sexual attraction.

i think that your partner should be your best friend, so the fact that you were best friends before you were a couple is great :) My bf is my best friend and it's wonderful

I do agree with you and not with what society says. I have two friends who actually just got married this month. They have know each other since they were 12 or so as well. Throughout the years, they have come to know each other very well and were best friends,Eventually, they ended up getting married. They make a great couple together.
I truly believe you really need to know your partner-to-be quite well (not necessarily 6 years, but definitely more than 3 months or whatever when couples think they're ready for marriage. Did that make sense right now?).
I'm happy for you both and hope things pull together smoothly! ^_^

My best friend and I decided to cross that FINE line about three years ago and I couldn't ask for a better partner. We understand each other and we know what makes each other CLICK and well as what makes the other one happy. And the good part about the whole thing we are expecting a baby boy in October! So I say go for it, what's the worst that could happen.......you just might like it. Besides who knows you better than ur best bud???

I agree w/ the other comment stating that your partner should be your best friend. My daughters father and I were apart for 17 years, but we always remained the best of friends. We are now back together and it's the most comfortable feeling in the world to be loved for EXACTLY who you are.

I think people should only date people who they have a great bond with. The only downside is if you might not have enough spark sometimes. The other downside is if you breakup you may loose a close friend. Regardless I think everyone should have a friendship before they date.

I disagree.
A best friend is somebody who you discuss your problems with, brag of sexual escapades to, drink with, fight with, go searching for women (or men) with. A best friend will always be your friend regardless of whom you're having sex with.
Now...a girlfriend (or boyfriend) is totally different. Most of have had girlfriends that we no longer speaker to because of our current partner or their current partner.
So you risk losing a friend.

Good for you. I think people say that because in the event your relationship doesn't work out, you run the risk of losing your best friend. If it has worked out for you, than who cares what others say.
