European governments are cowardly. If it weren't for the USA, Britons would be speaking German, along with most of Europe.
But to answer your question, if we backed off like most others did we would be fighting terrorism in our cities, defusing plots in our schools and neighborhoods, etc. It is better to fight the enemy abroad then in ones own backyard as it were.

What makes you think that Europe is cowardly? They are simply less boastful on how they handle terrorist threats. Plus they aren't driven to send troops at a minutest hint of impending danger. It's a different approach of which you could say that the US is somewhat proactive and Europe deals with facts as and when they occur.
I live in Europe and I'm feeling quite safe and am even confident that European governments and secret services have enough control to do what has to be done, for a good part. Meanwhile you have to live with the fact that you cannot prevent everything.
On a side note also terrorism may have a big impact, but so far there are more people dying in traffic accidents than from terrorism. So using a perspective of true proportions doesn't hurt all that much either. In all simplicity, terrorism is an act of unhappy people. So the question should really be why are they so unhappy that they resort to such vile means?

My God (sarcastic fearful voice)!
We're under attack? Where? Israel, Lebanon and the rest of the Middle East? That's another state is it? I shall go and cower in my bomb shelter in continental U.S. right now, because that is right next door and a clear threat to MY freedom.
Good thing we fooled the rest of the world by signing all those pesky international laws and bitching at everyone else who breaks them. Fortunately, we Americans are above all laws, especially human ones.
Hell, we lost in the World Court to Nicaragua, but they deserved all those civilian damages, just like the Middle East does!
[yes, folks, that was sarcasm. Oozing out.]
P.S. Enough of this whole U.S. won World War II argument. THey only stopped making money selling weapons to all sides once their own harbor was attacked, and joined near the end of the war. What about the millions of Russians and Europeans who lost their lives? They weren't heroes? Or is that privilege reserved only for American soldiers?

Need you ask, take a look at Israel and Lebanon. Europe is not cowardly but believes everything can be solved with rhetoric. I wish this would be so, but we have no Utopian societies today.

haha that's a good question.. if the US was as cowardly as the Europeans then... we wouldn't have the problem of terrorism.. the only reason that binladin and his homies want to attack us is because we were in Iraq in the early 90's... America has its way of showing up where they arent wanted... especially the Bush family

Israel does have this accurate. The UN will discover Israel at fault no count number what it does. Israel can not overlook about 1000's of rockets falling on their cities. No different u . s . may. Civilian casualties are due typically to hamas making use of civilians as human shields. Israel needs to shrink civilian casualties as this will develop international rigidity. Hamas needs to maximise Palestinian civilian casualties because it advantages their reason (struggling with Israel).

I'm curious as to why you think European countries don't defend themselves. Where do you get your info.? Are you European? I think they are more about looking at rational ways to be defensive rather than be OFFENSIVE like the current U.S. government.

Amongst themselves of course. Same as in Africa, that part of the world has always seen conflict one tribe against another.

Trying to recruit people to kill us by blowing themselves up.
As it stands, they have plenty willing to do it now. While our recruitment for the military is consistently falling short of needed levels.
