It Depends on the object you are planning to take.
Basic requirements are
1. Put the camera on a tripod.
2.Program mode to be selected .In this mode camera selects the shutter timing and the aperture.But mostly the camera keeps the aperture opened this reduces the depth of field.You can try A or aperture priority , where you specify the aperture the camera selects the shutter timing to the light available automatically.
3.Make Sure you switch off the flash .Since that much close some amateur models cannot control the light properly, you might get a patch of light if the object is glossy/reflective.
4. if you want ,if your camera has the ability that a user can reduce the flash output, then use the flash with low output as the result will be much more good.

Use a low ISO and a tripod if you can, set it on Macro mode and you should be ok.

tried turning the flash off.set it to automatic .read the manual under closeups
