I have two cats (male and female). The female eats her food just like most cats do, one small bite at a time, but the male basically inhales his food without chewing, and then proceeds to yak it all over the carpet. I've tried just putting a little bit of food in the bowl for him, but if he can see the bottom of the bowl he won't touch it and just nags me to put more in. Any ideas on how to get him to slow down and chew?

Some cats are really bothered if they have to eat where there is a lot of activity. My cat does this. If people are walking around near the food, talking or making noise, she gets skittish and gobbles her food.

Put the food bowls in a quiet part of the house and give the cats time to eat in peace.

Also, check to see that the food is mostly meat based. Cats are carnivores and they aren't designed to eat lots of grain. Most commercial cat foods have lots of corn meal, rice, or oats in it, which can upset the stomachs of some cats. Cats are supposed to eat meat!

My big black male does that occasionally. He is taking in air by eating too fast, which is causing him to throw up. Just put small amounts down, he WILL eat it if hes hungry, I know its hard, but, walk away, so he wont have you there to nag at!

you might also want to try raising the food dish up off the floor so it doesn't have to have it's head lower than the throat, etc. Doesn't always help but I've read that it could improve your situation.

Small feedings of wet food, several times a day. Have you treated him for hair balls?

EASY question.

Stop feeding it. If it has no food in it's stomach, it has no food to throw up.

He may be allergic to that brand of food. Try another kind.
