The Essenes were a separatist group of Jews who had moved out of Jerusalem and who taught a doctrine that was based upon the Scriptures but had differences with the man made traditions of the Jewish religion.

During that time they were in danger not only from the Jewish rulers but also from the Romans who were occupying Israel at that time and they lived in an area with natural caves built in the hill sides where they would store their documents in case they were overrun by their enemies.

Personally, I believe that God orchestrated the hiding of the scrolls to provide a latter day confirmation of the Scriptures that have been handed down to us over the centuries. He's good like, that you know?

Romans 2:4 Or do you despise the riches of His kindness, and forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?

well hidden is a very definitive word. so i don't think they were hidden in the sense that they were put away never to be found

the scrolls contain bible book and partial books
the writers or maybe just the previous owners of the scrolls hid from the Romans who were killing lots of people in those days they crucified over 100,000 one who happened to be deified by Saul (Paul) of tarsus, named Jesus

anyway the scrolls were used for study but they were made of material that would degenerate rather quickly especially in the dry desert air
so when using them the scrolls would be stored in these jugs that would prolong the life of the scrolls
I don't think they were hidden , they were more likely abandoned/forgotten maybe the readers were all killed or had to flee when the Romans came to town

Those were the earlier believer who was running away from the Roman soldiers. So they bring the bible along.

So, the place they hide became the place where the scroll was hidden.

the texts weren't hidden as much as stored in a respectful way -- old texts or unused ones are placed in what is called a genizah, a burial place (though not always actually buried).

They were the writings of a group of mystics. That sort of thing wasn't too uncommon in those days. Write something bizarre, then put it in your little cave, which turns into something like a library for you.
