The only relevant question is: Will it harm your career if you don't talk to the person? If yes: talk to them. If no: don't bother. There are plenty of cunning ways to get people you don't like to leave. eg. Trumped-up groping allegations; anonymous death-threats in birthday / wedding anniversary cards.

Yes, I think it is wrong to REFUSE to speak to this colleague. Ok, so you don't like them. So what? No-one is suggesting you try and become this person's best friend, but I do think you should make an effort to ensure you have at least a harmonious working relationship. After all, you never know when/if this person will become your boss, or help you in some way. And if they have the power or authority to make your life difficult, why bait them?
In a work environment people should act in a mature and professional manner. You're a grown up now, aren't you? Put petty things aside and get on with building a calm environment where you can spend the majority of your waking hours.

Yes, it is wrong to refuse to speak to a colleague because you don't like them because there is always likely to be someone in a fairly large group of people who has something about them that you don't like. It's important to control any feelings of dislike, and be at least polite with that person. It's important for the good functioning of the workplace, and also for your own development as a person. It's even better to be pleasant to that person and try to help him or her in any way you can. He or she may even become your friend eventually.

No, there is nothing wrong about not speaking with someone you don't like. However, if your job requires open communication between this person and you, you'll have to relent and keep your conversation to work related topics only. If you feel threatened or that you might be threatening to this colleague, I'd ask your boss for a transfer.

You don't have to be social with a colleague that you don't like, but in the context of work you should put your personal dislike aside so you can work with that person and be civil to them, not condescending or adversarial. That is the essence of being a professional. If you dislike a co-worker and you show it every chance you get, you'll be labeled as one who doesn't work and play well with others.

I would say that you should avoid speaking to them about anything except for work issues, because if you ignore them completely then your boss my have a problem. But at the same time you dont want to say something that would get you into trouble.

The more you advance in the professional world the more people you have to face you don't like. If you avoid them, then it could burn bridges that you will need later on. So be polite with them. But it is OK to turn them down on social outings. But always be polite and nice in the office.
