This is not a complete question. What are you trying to achieve and do you have any limiting physical problems. If you have bad knees, I would not run. Swimming is the best all round exercise since it combines cardio with some muscle toning. I like the elliptical since it is joint friendly and I can run on it. If you are looking for an activity to do outside of the gym, than I would buy a bike and ride that.

treadmill, aerobics, swimming, whatever for 30 minutes--anything that keeps your heart rate in your target zone for AT LEAST 20 minutes solid. 30 is better and burns fat great! RUN or JUMP ROPE. To find out your target heart rate for cardio workouts take 220 minus your age, then multiply that number times .6 and .8--this will give you what your heart rate should be for the 20 minutes. Example: if you are 30---220-30=190 190 X .6=114 190 X .8=152 so make sure you keep your heart rate between 114-152. The higher the better-try to keep your heart rate at about 140 beats per minute for your workout-remember to warm up for 5 minutes and cool down for 5 minutes.
