Yes, Advantage can get expensive. But you have to consider that you can spend hundreds combatting a flea problem if you let your preventative lapse.

We use Frontline, it is not cheap but one dose keeps fleas off for 3 months, so is not expensive when you look at it that way. I only put Frontline on twice a year in the spring and mid summer and I never have fleas on the dogs or in the house.
Many of the flea preventatives that you can get at the grocery store and like tend to only last a month at best sometimes not that long. You really get what you pay for with flea preventatives. You also need to consider if the preventative that is cheaper will stay on after bathes, not all will. Frontline does but all preventatives will weaken to some degree if you bathe your dog often or let them play in water often.

I use the otc Bio Spot and have for over 10 years. I've used it on my 3 dogs and on all the rescues that I've had over the last 5 yrs. I've never seen a flea or tick. It works!

I understand that yeast tablets with garlic will keep off fleas and ticks since they don't like the smell and taste or something. Or rub a small amount of yeast into the coat, that is super cheap. buy it at the grocery store. I don't use these products like advantage, etc. because I don't like putting pesticides or unatural chemicals in or on my dog. they are flea free.

Sheesh, it's not THAT expensive. There are a lot of flea and tick-born diseases that dogs can get if you don't protect them fully, and the treatments for them are much more expensive.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, folks.

I use a good sarcoptic mange medicine.... soak the dog in water and then pour on and work in.. the sarcoptic mange(with rubber gloves) and that will keep the fleas and mites, etc off for a long time.
