Ok here is the story,
Originally it was called a Hamburger Steak and it was a thin patty made of ground beef seasoned with onions and fried. It origiated (or became highly associated) with the German Port of Hambur in the middle of the 19th century.
The adding of the -er at the end was a classic German way of turning a word into an adverb, meaning the HAMBURGER was invented.
Same way as a Frankfurter originally came from Frankfurt.

Typically the confusion comes about when the word passed to America where even though they knew it was made from beef they thought the name came from the word Ham and Burger, which basically made the way for further abbreviations of burger,
eg: veniburger, beanburger, beef burger cheeseburger, nutburger etc etc.
all of those were a burger made from the ingrident before it.
So this has further led to people thinking that hamburger is a burger made out of ham, when it is not it is just a steak which originated in Hamburg.

Having said that you will struggle to find anyone in the world who actually makes burgers actually made from ham.

But yeah there is no ham in hamburgers because the word originates from HAMBURG.

Hope that helps.

When in So Cal go to In and Out Burgers, a classic
hamburger in the 50s tradition. Very fresh and very tasty,
This is not an advertisement for In and Out. They are already
hugely successful and don't need you or me, just a little note
to someone who may not know of these places.

You don't find ham, beef, lamb or chicken in your average hamburger. It's more likely to contain snout, hoof, testicles, ears and reclaimed bits of meat from god-knows-where.

Still at least Hot Dogs contain dog, well they do in Korea at least !!
