This depends on where you are going.

What major airlines fly out of your local airport?
What city are you flying to?
Is there an alternative airport that you can fly from?
Is there an alternative airport that you can fly to?

Try these:

www.travelocity.com
www.expedia.com
www.priceline.com

Then check the major airline websites that are at your airport that you did not see at these travel websites.

Book 30 days in advanced to get the best prices. Shop around, dont just use the travel websites, I always find better deals with the airline, have better options for schedules and avoid booking fee's and out rageous restrictions. Look at the travel sites, then compare to the airlines website. Who ever has the best deal on the travel sites is who you should check with first.

Avoid Friday and Sunday departures/returns to save money. Those are the most expensive travel days. Fall schedules come out in August and prices will be going up.

No matter what site you use, READ THE FARE RULES!!

Go to the airports website to see who services that station. Not all airlines participate with the travel sites like Jet Blue and Southwest. They may be a discount carrier, but I find better deals on the legacy carriers like Delta, American, United....etc

Know the surrounding airports, if there are. They are called co-terminals. For example, San Francisco you can also fly into Oakland and San Jose...Chicago O'Hare or Midway...JFK, LaGuardia or Newark are all 14 miles apart and if you are willing to drive the distance, check Gainesville, Daytona Beach or Melbourne instead of Orlando. BUT, the larger cities will have better fares for the most part. Smaller cities are not usually discounted if they are not a tourist destination.

It depends on where you are going. If one of the airports is a hub for a larger airline, look into that. They usually have decent airfare. Look around for smaller airline companies. I live in Cleveland and travel to Florida for family obligations often. I use USA3000 because they have the best rates. Sometimes, I fly out of Akron because it is a smaller airport and they have good deals too. Look for smaller nearby airports. Like Midway instead of Chicago or Gainsville instead of Orlando. Other than that, you just have to really search. If you see an airline with a great price on one of those search sites (i.e. travelocity, hotwire), check on that airline's website too. Sometimes it is more and others not. Always worth looking at though.

You can use all those online travel sites (hotwire, expedia, priceline, orbitz) but they do not show southwest airlines flights. They are usually the cheapest. Check out thier website:
