No, you can't learn martial arts quickly, however, there are some unorthodox styles that let you practice on your own and your space. It involves meditation, chi exercises, concentration and repetition. That's what those masters in the old days used to do in the forest.

Can you make a child grow tall any faster? Some things just take patience, and learning a martial art is one of them. The key is practice. The more you can practice, the better you will get. Your age isn't an issue, but only being able to practice sporadically will slow you down some.

Give it a shot and see what happens. Even in your situation, you can learn, just maybe not as fast as you like.

You are only 28 years old. You are young. That should be your first martial arts lesson. Stop limiting yourself.

A true martial arts is a life long process. There is no end. Yes, there are the McDojos and Take One's Dough schools but no one respects them.

There are no best martial arts. There are only great teachers whom YOU connect with. That is the "perfect" art for you.

Go for it. Take the pressure off and enjoy. Make it a part of your every day life and you life will never be the same.

If you have so much interest and passion in martial arts, nothing can deny you from learning martial arts. My Sensei started to learn martial arts at 32. I think you can try to train in dojo whenever you are at land, and practice the move when you are set to sail.
However, my sensei told me that there are no easy and short way to learn martial arts, as need a lot of practice to perfect every move.

It will take time and practice, but they always say practice makes perfect. You can take lessons while on land, and buy some movies of next levels to watch and practice on the ship. You can learn the first levels quickly, but it depends if you want to be a pro on how long you will have to practice. And your age has nothing to do with it, people do martial arts young and old. You have plenty of time to learn.

I'm 41 and didn't start until 5 years ago. Just have to practice and pay attention at school. And practice some more. I went to Iraq and started where I left off when I came back. I've reached a level of proficiency that would be a karate black belt equivalent. You can do it. Talk to the school's head instructor. Sometimes they accommodate situations like yours and some lock you into a contract whether you're there or not.

Progression is all on your effort and attitude. Forget about getting caught up in belts or ranks. Just try to be like a sponge and get everything they can teach you.

You can; I know men who started when they were twice your age. They learned, and so can you. As far as "quickly," well, that depends on how much work you put into it. Some things just take time and effort.

Given your constraints, you might put some effort into finding an art that you can practice in a very small space, so you can steal a minute or two of practice on shipboard. Wing Chun has possibilities there, as do some of the close-oriented silat styles.
Something that has forms *and uses them in fighting* would be to your advantage; you can work on your movements while on shipboard, even just a few minutes a day before you sleep, then spend your time on land working applications/sparring with a partner. You can also go through your movements in your head -- visualize them as completely as possible, and go through them that way.

There is no quick way. Learning martial arts takes time. You have to learn all the techniqes, moves, kicks, etc. Don't Rush, Work Really Hard.

i suggest you buy a martial arts book or video to watch and study as you go since you seem busy, even though this is not the best way. in martial arts, you can't learn quick. the masters will make you practice and get your forms and techniques right.
