they are secondary plants metabolites: Flavonoids, alkaloids, saponines, tannins, glycoside, anthraquinone, phytoestrogen, essential oils etc.
The term flavonoid refers to a class of plant secondary metabolites based around a phenylbenzopyrone structure. Flavonoids are most commonly known for their antioxidant activity.
An alkaloid is a nitrogenous organic molecule that has a pharmacological effect on humans and animals.
Saponins are glycosides of steroids, steroid alkaloids (steroids with a nitrogen function) or triterpenes found in plants, especially in the plant skins where they form a waxy protective coating. They dissolve in water to form a soapy froth.
Tannins are astringent, bitter-tasting plant polyphenols that bind and precipitate proteins.
a glycoside is any molecule in which a sugar group is bonded through its anomeric carbon to another group via an O-glycosidic bond or an S-glycosidic bond; the latter are also called thioglycosides. Glycosides play many important roles in living organisms, and numerous plant-produced glycosides are used as medications.
Anthraquinone is present in Rhubarb used as laxative.
Phytoestrogens are plant compounds with effects similar to those of estrogen, although somewhat weaker.
Essential oil is a concentrated, hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aromatic compounds extracted from plants. It may be produced by distillation, expression, or solvent extraction.
