Your comments are incomplete. After all, Iran is spending a good deal of money exploring nuclear power as an alternative to exhausting its dwindling oil resources which are better used as a commodity on the international oil market. Nonetheless, your point is well taken and reveals the dangers of religious extremism. During the Middle Ages, when Christianity turned its back on scientific and social progress, Islam appeared quite enlightened. Its doctors and scientists advanced human knowledge in a number of fronts including astronomy, medicine, etc.
The problem with any primitive religion is that irrational beliefs about the nature of the universe and man's place in it have a tendency to to be proven false when examined under the light of scientific understanding. Islam shut the door on further progress when its science approached the point of challenging some of its fundamental beliefs regarding nature and human life. However, it is unreasonable to assume that this rejection of scientific inquiry is uniquely an Islamic phenomena.
Christianity was the single most important cause of the Dark Ages, given that the Church eliminated almost all the pagan sources of knowledge and persecuted anyone who pursued new research. And, even today, were it not for the blessing that the US is a predominantly secular society, the Christian fundamentalists in this nation would love to turn back the clock and close the door on science. For example, Science has proven that the Christian understanding of how humanity was created to be false.
The problem with advancing scientific understanding and social progress is NOT this religion or that. It is a function of religious extremism, particularly in the form of literalism which insists that scripture be taken literally as fact rather than as metaphor. This extremism can be found in every religion. And, religious extremism exists only because of the innate human tendency to resist change, even when it might be change for the better.

Perhaps Muslims feel the problems in the world can be answered solely through their religion.
Oddly, the Middle East once focused on being a center of knowledge and wisdom, not through teaching the Koran, but many different areas of study.
Not sure when the shift took place.

Each to their own.
The problem with the world today is everyone thinks their religion or their way of life is better than anyone elses.
I am sure Buddists, Christians etc.... print their books of worship and build places to worship and distribute literature applicable to and explaining their religions.
So many religions, so many people. Pick the one that's right for you and don't force your views on anyone else.
Lets have a happy planet!!!!!

Because the muslims are trying to take over the world.
And I'm quoting a former Islamic priest (or whatever they call them) on this. Not making it up.

If this is the case, I would have to say that each person or group of persons will spend money on what they think is important or on what they believe will pay off in the end.

What makes you think muslims are spending on literature and nonmuslims are spending on education and research? Can you back that up, or are you just trying to make a statement?
