I drew half of a smiley face in each of my daughters shoes and she just has to make the smile complete. This works very well for her in her dance class...her teacher never has to tell her which shoe goes where! There is a brand of shoes that already has this in them as well.

First, not being able to tell the right feet and wetting the bed are still age appropriate. Second, the emotional trauma of your split up, a new mommy, and changing parents every few days could contribute to some of his delay. Not to say that this is your fault or that it will affect him permanently. It's perfectly normal. Now, is your child in any kind of childcare or preschool during the day? The teacher could give you a better idea of what she has seen of the interaction between your son and his mother. She can also give both of you ideas for how to help him at home. If you do not have him in preschool, you need to get him there. There are many programs available for free such as the universal pre-K program. Just make sure you find a program with qualified, caring professionals. The most important thing is to not show your son your frustration with him or his mother. Just be a loving daddy and talk to him, play with him and help him learn when he is with you and do not, seriosly, do NOT make him feel slow or like it is his fault that you and mommy aren't together.

Wow, I love the ideas you've been given! My son at 3 1/2 never put them on the wrong feet, so I don't know about not getting it until they're 7 or 8. But, we cheated. His shoes were given to him, and they had a Batman on the left side of the left shoe and the right side of the right shoe. I taught him the difference between the outside of his foot and the inside, as this is much easier for them then learning left or right. So he learned that Batman went on the outside of his foot, and got it right everytime. Now we recently bought a pair of shoes for him, Spiderman, without thinking about this whole left/right thing. Luckily, Spidey's hand touches the big toe if they're on the right foot, so once I noticed this and pointed it out to him, he was fine.

WHen he puts them on the wrong feet say they're wrong. He won't be able to learn yet I didn't learn until I was 8. When he gets to 7 or 8 show him the bottom of the shoes and tell him which shoe goes on which foot.

I drew a smiley face on the "inside" (not inside the shoe, but the parts that face each other by the arch of the foot) of each of my son's sneakers so that when his shoes were on the correct feet, the faces would be facing each other. He knew that the two faces had to be looking at each other to be on the right feet.

All children that start putting on thier shoes start by putting their shoes on the wrong foot. All you can do is remind him of is mistake. Tell him each time you going out that he will not go along with you if he continue to put the shoe on the wrong foot, this may help.

try to find stickers of faces (animals or people, it doesn't really matter) that look left and right. Put the right-facing one on the left shoe, and the left-facing one on the right shoe, and they will be looking at each other. Tell your son to make sure the animals are looking at each other.

Tie the laces of both the shoes in the correct position so that necessarily he has to untie to know which feet goes where.
