My great dane has a raised rash around her neck....it is raised and almost like it is scabs. She has had 2-3 ticks but they have been removed as we saw them. The bumps are black and raised and about the size of a dime.....

My Great Dane has a similar problem....(we did this!)...first off, take her to the vet and have a skin scraping done for mange (one time of mange is incurable-born with it...the other is curable)...once ruled out, it will probably be ruled as an allergic reaction to the ticks or, as in our case, a "full body" staff infection...we bathe our puppy every three days with a medicated shampoo from the vet (Titan hates baths by the way!)....be sure and do a follow-up in two weeks!...our puppy had scratched most of his hair out (he is black)...looked like he had mange.

Hi, You said u found a few ticks. Well, if u did not get the heads of the ticks out, it could be causing an infection. Ring worn would be a completely round spot w/ hair loss and itching. Raised bumps sounds like the ticks left and infection. I would suggest u take your dog to the vet. Get rid of all collars and get a harness. Do not use flea collars...they do not work. Spray the yard for fleas and ticks and use something like FRONTLINE once a month. i hope your dog feels better soon.

I used to see something like you describe when my pets were having an allergic reaction to their collars- especially flea collars. But they never had rashes like you describe. Get a vet to have a look, and meanwhile get a new collar in case the first one is infected or infested with something.

Good luck!

My Rhodesian Ridgeback has the same problem. His is caused by an allergy to most human food and wet dog meat. Dairy products are the worst for him, but he is allowed to eat fresh vegetables. He eats James Wellbeloved (gluten free) dried biscuits now and is fine. The only time he gets a rash is when we feed him human food!!!!!!!!

Are you sure it is not because of the collar? Try using a salve on it... Use neosporin.. she will not be able to lick it off. I use that stuff on my pets when possible... Normally.. ticks having been around the collar area wouild not have caused what you are talking about.

sort of sounds like ring worm - get her a new collar because if this is the case her current collar is infecting with the fungus that causes ring worm... exposure to sun helps cure it but you need to get proper stuff to put on it first

or it can be a reaction/irritation to her collar...

when in doubt see a vet

We just got through this. I'm just finishing up Odor's medicine. PS- I'm not a vet but here's what happened:
1. He started scratching and 'sucking' at his skin.
2. He had what we thought 'teenage acne' on his mouth and chin.
3. He was digging at his ears and they were starting to reek.
4. This was happening a year after last year's "outbreak".
5. His feet were blistering on the inside of his webbing under his paws.
6. His skin was coming out around his collar area, his ears, and his back.

Last year, we took him to an out of town vet who did a skin scrape and ruled out mange. He said that he had a flea bite allergy. He gave him a shot of Prednisone (a steroid). When we followed up with that vet, he had stopped scratching and his hair was beginning to come back in. Within days after the follow up visit, he got a LOT worse FAST. We took him to our vet and our vet wondered if the food he heard was recalled at the time (Diamond Maintenance) was shutting down his liver. (Turned out not to be but he did end up getting minute amounts of the toxin).
Anyway, he went on antibiotics for a staph infection. Cleared him up in no time. Then, it was the middle of winter. This June, Odor started getting sick of again. We got him on 1500 mg of Cephalexin and the Prednisone tablets. The Prednisone you need to watch because it made Odor lose his bladder control. His hair is starting to come back in. We narrowed the 'root' of the infection down to a cut on Odor's paw from walking him on the concrete sidewalks of Columbus, OH. He ended up picking a shard of glass and the staph came from the ground in the soil.

Here's my advice out of all that blah, blah. Get a skin test for mange done at the vet. Find a vet that has experience with Danes. Talk to a local breeder to find out who. Get your baby on antibiotics and medicated shampoo. You might also try some fish oil (Omega fatty acids) in his/her food to add some oil back into his/her coat. Then, order paw booties from Dr.'s Foster and Smith. Prevention is the best medicine. I wish you lots of luck and more happiness with your baby!

Does she wear a flea collar? She could be allergic to the insecticide in the collar. Ask the vet.
