I have two male kittens less than four months old. The orange one keeps suckling on the grey one's back between the shoulder blades. What is up with that?

they are doing this because they are still young, and they are acting as if the other one is the mother.

It will stop eventually..

This isn't strange behavior at all.

They are cats. Cats are weird. Nuff said.

My daughters have a total of six cats. There isn't 2 IQ points in the whole bunch.

Good luck with the cats and don't be surprised it one of them tries to suckle a bus while the other sleeps on the plume of a geyser at Yellowstone.

Honestly, cats are not the brightest bulbs in the box. Although cat lovers are a piece of work as well. I met a woman yesterday. One of her lovely cats attacked her leg. She is diabetic, has an infection, is scheduled for an amputation, and still plans to keep the cat. I may have actually met something dimmer than a cat, a cat owner.

BTW, your cats are only strange within normal parameters. They will, almost certainly be fine. Kittens interact with each other on a number of levels. I'm not hearing anything from you that would cause me any concern. And just because I don't like cats doesn't mean I don't have considerable experience with them. With my daughters I have done research and nursed cats for the last 15 years. And not once has one of our cats warned us of a prowler. My dog does that about once a month... and my dog doesn't have a smelly litter box.

This is common, it is what they do to the mother to get milk. When seperated from the mother they probably do it for comfort. My cats were rescued, two sisters about 7 months when i got them. It was winter time and i would wear a big fleecy jumper, they would regularly sit with me or lie on me and paw and suckle at the jumper. It think its so sweet, they were clearly very comfortable with me and just needed cuddles.

Maybe the gray cat is in some kind of pain and the orange cat is giving him comfort. Because they are old enough to no that there's no milk coming out of there.

Have they been separated from their mom? Suckling/nursing behavior is pretty common. Sometimes they do it on people.

Do not worry about it.. It will pass. Obviously the orange was weaned too soon and still wants to suck for milk.... It will pass. I have seen this many times and think nothing of it.

It natural, they are kittens. If they were taken from mother to early, sometimes they will do it. It's mainly to show affection to each other.

It's normal in kittens, especially young ones like your pair. They'll outgrow it in time.
