It's funny that you should bring this up as I have just returned from my holiday's and thouht exactly the same thing. No matter what airport you are in there is a line where you are suggested to stand behind.

This would make the whole process very straight forward as there would be plenty of room to get to the front when your case is there!

I thought about this and noticed that bacause a couple of people stand forward of the line when the carousel is busy it is hard to see your case coming so you to stand forward - perhaps it is this knock on effect!

Another observation I noticed yesterday was peoples desire to stand in queues. As soon as the gate staff arrived at the gate there was a massive rush to stand in line at the front of the desk - people seemed content to stand for about 20 mins in this queue - why? All the seats were numbered so being on in front of the next person doesn't actually make a difference. Instead of sitting in proper seat in the departure lounge you are sitting in a crampt cabin with people trying to jossel pass you!!

Arn't people funny!

Because they are morons.

You can always see your bag coming if you take a few steps back. I always like making someone move who has parked their trolley sideways along the carousel so I can get my bag.

I used to commute by air and did 2 flights per week on various airlines. For the sake of my health I couldn't afford to get angry about it so I just laughed at people.

Observations

1. People queue at the departure gate when they've got an allocated seat.

2. On budget airlines with no allocated ticket, everybody piles on top of each other to sit at the front, holding up everyone else from getting on the plane quickly. I like it when they then let people off by the backdoor where the seats are virtually empty.

3. When landed, they rush to remove their seatbelt before the plane stops moving (no major harm done but it's just a small personal gripe, it's not like they are going anywhere quickly).

4. The completely random passport control queue lengths and the resulting squabbles as people jostle for position.

5. People who go to the mouth of the baggage carousel only to find that they are at the wrong end when it starts up (that one is a personal fave)

People say that they don't want to be treated like cattle but then act like sheep and generally have the manners of pigs.

Oh because it's exciting! Luggage carousels are very fun indeed. There's this whole element of tension, plus I'm always reminded of an Absolutely Fabulous episode where Patsy stood on one and went round and round. Oh and also, I don't want anyone stealing my bags, so I make sure I have a good standing point to get mine from.

For the same reason they all stand up when the plane stops taxiing after landing - then spend 10 minutes, often with their head squashed against the luggage compartments waiting for the doors to open - all feverishly checking their mobile phones in case they miss a message by 10 minutes.

People are stupid. Maybe they think it will make the doors open quicker or their baggage come out quicker.

The reason that everyone rushers to get there suit luggage could be due to the need for a cigarette or alcohol. i never rush myself and i am happy to wait till last to get off the plane and i stand back from the carousel and wait till i see my luggage and then dive in to get it; this really bugs everybody elce.

It could also be because people have not travelled a lot and think they have to rush to get off the plane and run to the carousel expecting their luggage to magicaly be there, when there is clearly no need to.

One finely reason could be they are in rush to get a connecting flight; people sould leave enough time between flight then they would not have to rush; its called planning ahead.

i hope this has help answer you question.

That's a good question , Have you ever noticed how the people that rush forward are always the last to get their bags as well. I bet the handlers watch them then keep hold of their bags for a laugh.

I find if you arrive at check-in fairly near the end of the time allowed that your bags, being last on, are first off.
Doesn't always work but about 75% of the time it does.
