my wife wants to buy a circa 1990 911 .do you know of any pitfalls to avoid ie.dodgy engine sizes ,gearboxes etc.

the only problem i know of with them is the clutch master cylinder,,and the slave cylinder does give a few problem,s i have replaced 2 of them in the past year,,other than that,,the occasional rocker arm cover leak,,which is normal,,you should be OK,,beware though if this car has set a lot,,and not been driven much,,hope this help,s you,,,,PS they are good car,s,,drive good,,and handle really well,,enjoy it.

I think this is a great forum for asking your pompous question! The first step is finding out the year the car was made, instead of "circa 1990", then talk to a Porsche mechanic at a dealership having nothing to do with the sale and ask him his honest opinion based on what he has seen. Slip him a $20 for the advice and use that info.
