I read that they will attach your pet cat... is this true?

If they aren't used to cats they will most likely chase them. One whippet will usually not do much damage because the cat will swipe at him/her and the whippet will learn, but if you have several...they'll get the pack mentality and possibly kill the cat.
I have two whippets and they have killed neighbors cats who have come into our fence. It's the sighthound mentality. They will chase anything small that runs.
If you have a whippet and a cat, make sure the cat has a place to get away from the whippet. Also, it's best if the whippet is introduced to the cat as a puppy. If introduced as a puppy then the whippet will probably not see the cat as a meal and only as a fun thing to play chase with. I have seen whippets living happily with cats, so I know it can be done.
It all depends on the particular whippet and the particular cat...

I have a slew of them. You need to be very careful with sighthounds and cats. Some seem to be ok with them as long as they are in the house together. I would NOT leave them alone unsupervised, ever. If you can't supervise them, crate the Whippet or shut the cat in a room.
My parents hounds lived with 2 cats for years. One day the cat went running across a room and the chase instinct kicked in. It was awful. My sister does have a cat with her hounds, and it has been fine. I personally would not have a cat with mine, but some people do.
Gitemgang - my hunting is mostly of the plastic bag variety, although my hounds would much rather do real hunting! But yeah, I had also thought it would be fun to meet sometime! Seems real dog people are getting painfully scarce! I will be going to some field trials this fall in the twin city area and maybe Wisc.

CAN be "stock-broke" to leave em alone but...why bother? Sorry,couldn't resist. I know some people actually like cats. sorry
