My boyfriends grandmother passed away and then shortly after his grandfather passed away. Now the same thing happened with a co-worker.

Losing a loved one after years of being together brings about a depression in the surviving spouse, most give up on thier own medical needs. Emotions can play havoc with the body. My father was married to my mom for 27 years until 1978. He remarried and lived to the age 75, even though he was remarried he carried the love he had for my mom to his grave. He even told all of his children that when the time came he wanted to be layed to rest beside mom, and that is where he is today. My mom and dads life reminds of the song by George Jones (He stoped loving her today)

It's possible, I know that happened in my family as well. I think sometimes it really is dying of a broken heart. Though some people are strong enough to llive on, some people aren't.

As a funeral director I have seen this happen many times. They have nothing to live for anymore and give up due to a broken heart.
