In the celestial hierarchy a spiritual being next in rank above an angel. The word "archangel" occurs several times in the Bible. In the new testament the voice of an archangel and the sounding of the trumpet of God will signal the coming of Christ for His people (1 Thess 4 :16 ). Michael the archangel disputed with the devil about the body of Moses (Jude 9). In the old testament Michael is described as having great power and authority (Dan 10:13) and is the guardian of Israel (Dan 10:21), especially in the "time of trouble"in the last days (Dan 12:11).

The difference between an angel and archangel is the rank. Just like Majors are over the Captains and Corporals are over the Privates in the army. Archangels are higher ranking than angels are. Each one has a certain job to do. What all they do is unknown to humans. But rest assured, they do their parts in watching over us too.

I'm reading a book called Angels by Billy Graham right now and you can learn all about angels in it, but according to what it says in the Bible it only speaks of one archangel and that is Michael, but before the fall of Lucifer it is believed that he was an archangel equal or perhaps superior to Michael.

The prefix "arch",meaning "chief" or "principle" implies that there is only one archangel, the chief angel;in the Scriptures "archangel"is never found in the plural. The Scriptures name Michael the resurrected Jesus as the Archangel.
The Bible also makes mention of cherubs. These are angelic creatures of high rank having special duties. The first of the 91 times they are mentioned in the Bible is at Gen.3:24 after God driving Adam and Eve out of the Eden, cherubs were posted at the E entrance with a flaming blade of a sword to guard the way to the tree of life.
The Bible also mention Seraphs. These mighty heavenly creatures are evidently of very high position in God's arrangement, since they are shown in attendance at God's throne.
Then there is the great body of angelic messengers.(angel literally means messenger)who serve as a means of communication between God and man. However, they do more than just simply relay messages. As agents and deputies of the Most High God,they serve as responsible executioners of the divine purpose,be it protection and deliverance of God's people or destruction of the wicked.-Gen.19:1-26.

Ezekiel 10:20 This is the living creature that I saw under the God of Israel by the river of Chebar; and I knew that they were the cherubims.

21Every one had four faces apiece, and every one four wings; and the likeness of the hands of a man was under their wings.

22And the likeness of their faces was the same faces which I saw by the river of Chebar, their appearances and themselves: they went every one straight forward.

There is no description of the Archangels in the Bible. The only one named is Michael in the ninth verse of Jude.

However, it would imply that an archangel would be higher in rank than an angel.

First a similarity, they are both imagined beings.

But in mythology, an archangel would be of a higher rank.
