It really depends on the kind of paint you have. If you have a flat paint (one that has no shine or sheen to it) it's not washable at all. If you scrub, the paint as well as the marks will come off. If you have semi gloss or high gloss, then just some good old soap and water will do. If you need to repaint, and you now see the problem, be sure to get a scrubbable paint. I understand, as the new house we bought had flat paint, and that lasted about 6 mos and then I repainted everywhere with a scrubbable semi gloss. It looks better anyway and now I can wipe down the walls

We re-painted with enamel paint. You can scrub off the oils, dirt and drool( we have 2 mastiffs) and the paint stays perfect. It costs a little more, but really lasts a long time, cuz cleaning does not fade it, or remove it. The gut we used to do the painting explained it to us, and he was right.

The best and simplest method is to get into the routine of washing them on a regular basis. I do it every couple of days with a mild spray cleaner like 409. It takes only moments and is always clean. never let it build up...then you have a real mess.

Try cleaning the spot with plain white vinegar. Or try oxyclean, laundry spray cleaner.
