Building muscle will help you burn more fat. Jogging is a good cardio-vascular exercise, but indeed it is a bit boring unless you are "born to run", and it can be hard on your knees. You have to really make sure to stretch well both before and after a run or you can really injure yourself. For building muscle tone I would recommend indoor rock climbing. It uses muscles you never knew you had! Swimming is another good all around exercise that uses most of your muscles. At the gym I use the elliptical trainer. It is low impact on my knees (I injured my knees running) and it burns an equal amount of calories if you keep your pace up.
If you do decide to run, try interval training, so walk, jog, and sprint in intervals. That gives you an excellent cardio workout. Make sure you buy good running shoes. Go to a store that caters to runners and have them properly fit you for shoes. It may cost you a bit more, but in the long "run" you're body will thank you for it.
Good luck.

RE:
How effective is jogging to lose weight? Are there better sports?
I would like to lose a couple of stone and alongside better eating habits I am considering jogging.
I would like to know how many calories you lose for how much time spent jogging etc..... so see if its worth the effort.
Are there other ways/sports that are more effective (and maybe not so...

It depends on how hard you push yourself but the good thing about 'jogging' is that you can increase your speed/distance as and when you feel ready. Also, as it's a impact (not as in hitting other people but hitting the road as you run) it has the benefit of increasing your bone density/strength.
Start at a speed that you feel happy (might be walking speed) and build up to a strong jog. Vary the distances you run and even the terrain. Also, include a bit of sprint training ......... change the speed you run at as you jog - the reason for the changing speed, route etc is to avoid your body getting use to the same routine and it tricks your muscles into working harder (the same is true if you are working out at the gym).
Set yourself a target ........ find a 5km/10km/15km etc run that you can enter as your running improves.
Other activities you could try -
Cycling
Swimming
Martial Art (a free style kick-boxing would be fat burning)
Gym (avoid to much free-weigh work & lift atleast 15-20 reps of each)

Jogging is great if you have good knees! Speed walking and doing cardio such as an elliptical machine are also great. I **think** jogging burns like 100 calories every 30 minutes if I can remember right. (I used to jog all the time, but it's been years!) Best advice is try and stay away from foods you know are terrible and 30 minutes of exercise of your choice 3 times a week. Good luck!

Eating healthy is a start. Jogging burns alot of calories but is hard on the joints because of the pounding. Walking is just as good you may have to go a little longer than if you were jogging. Biking is nice because you can kind of go where ever you want and see different things at the same time.

the best thing to do is change up your jogging routine. Think of your body like a car. Stop and go driving uses the most gas correct? So stop and go jogging will burn the most calories. Try the following routine:
Walk-2 minutes
Jog-1 minute
Sprint-30 seconds
Walk-1 minute
Jog-2 minutes
Sprint-30 seconds
Walk-5 minutes
Jog-5 minutes
that was just an example...you don't have to follow it to a tee, just remember that changing the routine throughout the entire "jog" will maximize the calorie expenditure.

About 100 calories for every 1.3 ks you jog. Jogging is an excellent way to lose weight and get in shape. I think you will find that jogging (running), can be anything but boring, if you like music, listen to music. Just enjoy the ride. Your body's energy alone propelling you through distance, it is quite amazing when you think about it.

STOP THE INSANITY!!!!!
HERE ARE THE BASICS:
1. you lose weight by consuming fewer Calories than you burn
2. you gain weight by consuming more Calories than you burn.
3. you should be concerned with losing FAT, not weight.
4. You should be more concerned with your percent body fat, not your weight.
5. the best, most effective way or burning fat is by combining weight-training and cardio exercise. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism will be. You will burn more calories all day long, including while you sleep.
6. you should eat 6-8 small meals each day - this will prevent you from eating 3 large meal which will slow your metabolism while your body works to digest the large quantity of food.
As a general rule of thumb, you should be weight-training 3-4 times per week and performing cardio 3-5 times per week.
Consider hiring a personal trainer (ISSA certified) and a nutritionist. The money spend on these services is worth more than spending money on pills and potions.
