i was a library assistant and during my 6 month probation period i was let go with no warning. i had been there 5 months. the supervisor said it was because of my attendance and the collection aspect of the job. i asked her on numerous occasions about my performance and attendance and she never once let me know my job was in jeopardy. around the same time my boyfriend of two years said he would rather just be friends. he is 52 and i am 47. these two events have really been a serious blow to my self esteem. to the point that i don't want to even try to find another job for fear of rejection and my bad work history how can i get out of this terrible rut i am in.

Let it go. If there is some sort of pattern going on with the job thing--check into it and chanage it. Why would your work history be less than stellar? Today is a new day. Start over, but learn from your mistakes. Find a new job. Everyone gets rejected at some point or other. Sylvester Stallone was rejected multiple times-time after time before he finally was able to star in a movie and became successful after that.
bf troubles...there will be someone better.
Good Luck. All will work out in the end.

Jeez, that's a truly woeful tale. Isn't there any recourse against your library employer? A probation period doesn't mean they can fire you with no reason. Check out your rights on that one and sue them for the satisfaction it gives. Bummer about the man, but screw his friendship, don't let him have his cake and eat it, tell him to piss off.

On the life front, don't stress about the work history. What you need is an outlook makeover. Your post suggests you're more intelligent than most of the people in here, so you need to use that to your advantage. Pad your resume with interesting stuff. I managed to get a high paying professional job by using my talent (writing) and a great deal of shennanigans on the resume to get a foot in. I worked for peanuts for 4 years, and then had the experience to get into a big multinational that pay me like I'm worth something. For example, I was a wiater for 7 years in about 8 restaurants, with a few BS sales and telemarketing jobs thrown in for pure agony. I 'repositioned' some of them as restaurant management jobs, and cut down the number to four. Plus I added several sales seminars, which I looked up online, and really turned on the juice when it came to objective and covering letter.

But more importantly, you need to get back to yourself, to paraphrase any number of idiotic self-help gurus. Change is as good as a holiday, so change towns, change your wardrobe as far as budget will allow, get a hobby, freshen what you eat, sleep earlier, cut out entertainment, especially TV and read management books, like Built to Last or Good to Great by Jim Collins. Try and get in a few study courses and try finding a job via the shotgun route. That is, send your CV to every reasonable ad in the paper, and search for new jobs online. Steel yourself against rejection and be determined to succeed, if not for huge financial rewards, to prove to yourself that you can.

good luck and godspeed.

Take ACTION...I am 48 and I am starting school in Sept. My husband is 36 and he is starting Aug. 5th......As far as your boyfriend...let the old poop go....
Life has a lot to offer, just get out there and take it! You have an advantage...you are not a young kid so take responsibility for yourself, I am not meaning that in a nasty way, I just mean if you get yourself into school...And believe me you don't have to have a lot of money, there are lots of government grants out there and student loans....You are old enough to know that you need to take classes seriously, You will feel so good about yourself! YOU CAN DO IT!

Decent people see you as a loser. They don't want you around. Who can blame them?
