I think it is possible. Wish to take the research forward. Any one working already on this? We may have a powerhouse here in future, who knows?

Let me clarify:The light beam from a vehicle strikes a billboard which has embedded device to store energy and convert power used for running traffic signals, road lights, timers and other gadgets. Has immense potential in energy-deficient areas such as Indian villages lined along highways.

To basically answer your question, the energy from headlights are very low and only a small percentage of this would even hit a billboard during normal driving. It is basically equivalent to a solar powered calculator, that energy won't be much and would probably be useless in general. Now there are materials made for building (such as roof shingles with imbedded solar cell) that do the same thing but use a better light source (the Sun). If you built more building with embedded solar cells in the materials then a decent percentage of energy could be saved. Also remember, solar cells are still quite expensive compared to other fuel sources. Lots of companies (including oil companies) are working on making it cheaper but many years will be required before solar cells are efficient and cheap enough for everyone to use.

The concept is interesting but solar power which had a much higher energy light source (the sun) is still very limited in what it can produce and the cost is still quite high.

Something like you are talking about is just a long way from being a reality or practical. They all ready have light panels that can convert light from a light bulb to electricity but it is at a very low level. I have one on my desk right now. It is a "solar" powered calculator by Casio.

This is a waste. First, you burn the fuel to generate electricity to charge the batteries, then you beam it on a bill board blah...blah...blah... You lose some part of the energy with each conversion from chemical to electrical to chemical to light to .....

If you want to help energy deficient socities, buy them generator and give them the money you would have spent on the car fuel for generator fuel.

In the alternative, build them a solar panel or other renewable energy source.

Ermmm Surley the energy used to create the inital light,
outweighs the energy brought back....

I mean, it could be used to Add to the cars re-charge from the
wheel sturning, but since that already can provide more charge than the battery can accept / store (hence lights brighter when revving) not really needed.......

It's a good idea, and one worth researching. Are we talking a "created" solar style or more of the heat produced by the said beams?? Both may be feasible.
