There are a few things you can do:

1) You can go to MY COMPUTER then right click on it to get to Properties. Do a disk cleanup and a disk compression. Then go to TOOLS and then do a disk defrag. A defrag will organize your harddrive like a filing cabinet.

2) Then go to START, then RUN. Type msconfig in the box and hit enter. Under the STARTUP tab, uncheck all the programs that you dont want in your startup. MOst of the time, this will speed up your computer.

3) You can add more RAMS. IF you 256MB ram, then whatever new programs you install will continually lag your computer. You might want to get more memory so that you dont have to deal with the slowness anymore.

the reason why the computer is slow after you turn it on is because there are lots of programs running at the back ground of your pc, you might thought that you already close a program but hardware wise it's not, for you to be able to clear it and if you are using windows XP click on start, then go to run then on the open box type msconfig and then go to start up tab then click on disable all, if you are using win98 or winme do the same thing and make sure that the only thing checked are system tray, load power profile,

also if you are windows XP try to defrag your pc once in a while and perform also disk clean up

just let me know if you were able to resolve this issue

Try to keep Anti virus. I use Zone security anti-virus. As you use internet, you need to clean up C drive for deleting temporaray internet files. You can also use defragmenter. It may speed up.
