There is no passage in scripture that says "marriage is the God-ordained covenantal union of one man and one woman," in fact what would technically be more correct would be to say, "the Bible teaches that marriage is a covenantal union of one man to as many women as he might want and be able to afford." The Bible lists numerous polygamists – and historically we know from the records that Herod had 9 wives – and does not imply that there’s anything improper about that!

Much of what people think of as Biblical is from European tradition, rather than middle eastern.
Monogamy, honesty and the sanctity of life are European ideas.

Views of marriage in the Old Testament were not monogamous, nor were they necessarily based on love. Arranged marriages were more common than not in ancient times. That said, Christians today follow the scriptures of the New Testament, which does promote a monogamous relationship between 1 man and 1 woman. Love is described in many ways in the New Testament, but in marriage it takes many kinds of love to make it last, doesn't it?

Marriage is a partnership, a joining or uniting of two people. Love? Oh sure, but not emotional love, although that's always nice. The love mentioned is the form of love that is an action, not an emotion.

Don't believe me? Just go ask anyone who has been married for 20 years or more, they'll say the same thing.

"Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." Genesis 2:24.

God's rule is specific. A married couple must leave father and mother and establish their own home, even if finances require that it be a one-room apartment. Husband and wife should decide together on such policies as these. Then she should inform her relatives and he, his. They must remain firm no matter who opposes. Thousands of divorces would be avoided if this rule were carefully followed.

"Above all hold unfailing your love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins." 1 Peter 4:8, RSV.* "Her husband ... praiseth her." Proverbs 31:28. "She that is married careth ... how she may please her husband." 1 Corinthians 7:34. "Be kindly affectioned one to another ... in honour preferring one another." Romans 12:10.

"Let not the sun go down upon your wrath." Ephesians 4:26. "Confess your faults one to another." James 5:16. "Forgetting those things which are behind." Philippians 3:13. "Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." Ephesians 4:32.

I think you are partly right. The Bible tells the husband to Love his wife, but tells the wife to submit to her husband. This is because (most) women are loving and nurturing naturally and men aren't. One the other hand Men need respect to to feel significant int he marriage so that is what the Bible tell women to do. And yes the bible does talk about monogamy in marriage.

Surely no-one takes a literal view of what the bible says! It says all sorts of things, including 2 different stories of how the earth began, stuff about eating lobsters being an abomination etc etc
