I feel your pain. I work in a restaurant and I don't smoke. My fellow employees are always wanting to go smoke before they go Ballistic. They get irritated and grumpy and they "need" to smoke or else. I don't smoke so I don't get that little break, I just get to watch their tables while they relax.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

we take the smoke breaks because we are addicted. Just take a break yourself. there is no law prohibiting you from taking a short walk or stepping out for ten minutes. It takes 7 minutes to smoke, the attitude we can have if we don't smoke, makes the management allow it.
I think you are being a bit unfair and discriminatory. You should thank us for setting a precedent that allows you more freedom, not lambaste us for an addiction. You didn't ask us to start, but you are being unfair in asking us to stop. You are not the management, you don't sign the paycheck, and if your boss doesn't have a problem, there is no reason in the world why you should have one.
When you pay my bills, and sign my paycheck, you may tell me what to do.
I am guessing that you are a Christian with a judgmental attitude like that. I am also guessing you don't have any diversity in your few friends.
You poor sorry human. I feel pity for you. To be so wrapped up in something out of your control is sad. You will not be able to do a damn thing about this. Not on any kind of large scale anyway. God help you if you take these feelings to your boss. Your co-workers will hate you and they will seek retribution.
Take a deep breath, learn to meditate during your co-workers smoke breaks. You will be a happier, healthier person for it.
It is all in the perception. Yours is negative.

I think it is at the managements discretion. I smoke, but i also feel that it disrupts things if you are heading out for a cigarette 3 times an hour. I think that since smoking is a personal choice, you should smoke during the allotted time for breaks. if you cant wait that long for a cigarette, get some nicorette or a patch. I am by no means against smoke breaks, but i do think people take advantage of the "i need a cigarette to function" excuse.

It is just at the managers discretion I'm afraid, you will probably find they smoke as well, which makes matters worse, cos if they didn't it would n't happen. Why don't you do the same as I did one day. When your annoying colleagues go for their extra *** breaks, walk away from your work and stand by the door and wait for them to come back to their responsibilities. If your manager says anything to you about skiving, just stand your ground and just say, I was only doing what everyone else was doing, only I don't need to suck a piece of paper to do **** all. Then they'll realise just how pissed off you are. They can't sack you, equal opportunities. Why should you carry on working whilst those lazy bastards have another break. You have my full support. Go get em!

I am a smoker.

I use my health and safety breaks (5 minutes every hour away from a VDU) to have one 10 min break in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Anyone - smokers and nonsmokers are entitled to the same breaks.

But I do agree with you some people do take the p*ss and take a 10 minute break every hour which should not be allowed!

I can't get my head round why they get away with it so much either. We as non smokers don't get the equivalent "gossip break" or "makeup break" so why is their bad habit rewarded? Surely a company's no smoking policy should mean exactly that, NO SMOKING, NOT "no smoking while you are in the office but you can pop out for a quick *** whenever you feel like it and smoke it directly outside the office"

I am a smoker. The need for a break is that you feel the need to smoke so you can relax a little, but where I am employed smokers do not get more breaks than non-smokers. Therefore the smokers just have to suck it up until it's time for their break.

Isn't there some kind of break rules where you work? We get a 15 minute break in morning & afternoon, and 1/2 hour lunch break. We're expected to smoke during those times....

Get over it. Hope you put as much time into your work as you seem to do about counting the time smokers need a 'cigarette break' get a life

I don't think so, managers discretion. I agree with you though, the amount of times I have had to do unpaid overtime because some smoker has neglected to do half of the work they were supposed to because they were outside puffing away is unreal. I cannot stand it.

Employees have no legal right to cigarette breaks just as they have no legal right to use the company internet connection for browsing answers.

Common sense rules the day. Personally I believe they are taking the micky but I don't smoke.

Have a look at the reference for more info.
