Big question.

I'll give you the short answer
1) Jesus visited an ancient civilization in North America. That civilization wrote down accounts of their history and knowledge of God and Jesus on golden tablets.
2) Those golden tablets buried and Joseph Smith found it in the early 1800's. The book was translated and became the Book of Mormon.
3) Members of the church revered Joseph Smith as a prophet and he has passed down his prophet status to a succession of leaders.
4) The Mormons were persecuted for their radical beliefs, including polygamy and baptism of the dead and many fled to the territory of Utah with Smith's successor Brigham Young, where they settled the area.
5) Mormons believe in several degrees of heaven and that only members of the highest standing get to the highest level of heaven, where they become gods themselves.
6) The main body of the church no longer practice polygamy but some splinter groups do. Blacks were not allowed to enter the priesthood until the mid 1970's.
7) They believe in strong family values and bonds and set aside time each week for family home evenings.
8) All Mormons are encouraged to go on a mission at sometime in their life, to get married in a Mormon temple, wear special Mormon underwear and to make lots of babies.

They believe that a (white) tribe from Israel that somehow ended up in the midwest along with another tribe (of injuns)in biblical times. The injuns killed off the white tribe but they left a gold tablet behind which contained another gospel of the new testament ( I think). This guy Joseph Smith claimed that he found the tablets buried in a location which he was led to by some kind of angel. So Joe transcribed the tablets into a new bible, unfortunately no one else saw the tablets to verify this. Basically its a load of crap but that doesn't make mormons bad people.

The South Park episode sez it best...

dum, dum, dum,
dum, dum, dum,
dum, dum dum...

But in a nutshell: One of the lost tribes of Israel took a boat across the ocean and landed somewhere in America, taught everybody how to build pyramids (which they learned to do while slaves of Egypt).

Centuries later Jesus stops by there on his way to ascension, tells them "Hey guys, I'm the Messiah your forefathers have been waiting for". The now indian-type-jews reject him. One of their prophets does the "woe unto you, you will be punished speech, and centuries later god (Jesus) punishes the bad indian/jews by making it OK for the white man to slaughter them all, destroy their way of life, and steal their lands.

And (as Spike on BTVS said) feel really bad about it.

Now the Mormons are busy retro-baptizing everybody who ever existed. Once everybody who has ever lived has been baptized as a Mormon, Jesus will come back and yada, yada, yada... You know the rest.

That's pretty much it.

Oh yeah, he didn't lose the tablets... one his followers wives hid or destroyed them because she thought it was the biggest most obvious load of bullcrap she had ever heard. Ask about the magic rocks and the big hat. There's a laugh!

See:http://beta.scriptures.lds.org/en/a_of_f/1

I heard it said, if you want to know hate about the Pawnee(native American nation) ask the crow(nation). Likewise, if you want to know the truth about the Mormons, ask one of them, not another person who has nothing good to say about them, or is ignorant of their doctrines. It is also not advisable to ask the malcontents (ex-Mormons) unless you want an often shaded view of the churches true beliefs and doctrines.

Mormonism is a Christian denomination, so they more or less believe what other Christians believe.
