J indicates BUSINESS CLASS PREMIUM

It's a class that many airlines don't have, but for some airlines it is the highest class they have so you could see it as first class.

Ignore the two answers above. Proper First Class does still exist on many airlines, particularly in Europe and Asia, but even on many US airlines including international United and American flights. The poster is asking about the letter indicating the fare type on the ticket, not the letter indicating the seating row.

Just for future reference:

C - Business Class
Y - Economy Class
F - First Class

They are the most common codes, but airlines use others. S can also mean economy class, W is used to indicate fares on weekend flights and so on.
