because we are an island
because there is still a large threat of terrorism.
because we will always (as good/nice people) have to step in and help ie iraq, afghanistan
because it provides a safety net for our country
because the USA need a country to go in first so they can then go in later (AS ALWAYS) and try and claim all the glory.
Lots of reasons. But mainly because contemporary as Britain is currently the fact we have the military does provide a deterrant to tinpot dictators who may decied to just walk in to Britain and take over if there wasn't any military.
The military is like having house/car insurance - you hope to god it won't happen and you won't have to claim but it is reassuring to know if you have to its there.

Contemporary Britain? Are you sure about that statement.
If we don't have them as a deterrent, we'll be taken over by Islam in a flash.
We have THE BEST forces in the world & I am proud of them
What is the point of having negative people like you in Britain? Your type are half the reason the country is going down the pan. No loyalty or pride.
Englands.glory should get the TEN Points here.. He has given you the best answer.

There is no point at all.
There are only two ways that modern Britain could be attacked - by nuclear weapons, in which case the whole world would be involved and we would wipe each other out (and the army wouldn't be able to do anything about that), or by terrorist bombings, and the army cannot fight a war against a small group of suicide bombers who are probably british citizens themselves anyway!
As for 'helping' abroad, they just get sent by Tony Blair to interfere in places like Kosovo and create lots of refugees which the government later abandons.
I would rather die than join the army.

Of course we need the British Army otherwise what would we do with 400,000 uniforms 300 tanks, 150 Multi launch rocket systems 12,000 land-rovers 400,00 SA 80's wot jam up etc etc, i suppose we could put em on EBay though, I don't believe in armies but I believe in a defence of the realm and Britain's armed forces provide that defence, for our freedom and peace of mind for our citizens abroad who will be defended by our armed forces if needed remember the Falklands. 250 humans and 300,000 sheep we didn't go there to save the sheep

They deter invasion. You wouldn't be asking it if we were being invaded now, would you? We need a military as long as any part of the world is in a warlike or non-peaceful condition. That means we'll always have a military.
"Alex should be working" is an idiot who doesn't deserve to have a military defending him. There are men and women who have died defending the Nation's interests and there are people like him who want to get rid of us. If everyone was like him, I wouldn't have joined up. I wouldn't want to defend a nation of fools who think that this nation is safe. We wouldn't be safe if it wasn't for the military. A neighbour could just waltz in and take the country. Hell, a single guy with a gun could take the country if there was no military, then guys like "alex should be working" would be pleading for us to come back to save him from his own mistakes. We will always need a military, people who think otherwise are just naive to the world around them. It's not all lovey dovey and Nations need protection. It's the fact that we're doing such a good job that you feel safe in our Country.

Why do we need them? i'm a little shocked at this question to tell you the truth but as a woman who is dating a British soldier and who comes from a Military upbringing i have to make it very clear to you.
For over a century the people who have been brave enough and strong enough to wear the uniform of any of the British Forces have not only helped us to live in the way we do today but they have prevented our little country and many others across the globe from being run by rulers who do nothing but murder and cage their citizens.
Think of it in this way these Men and Women in the Army do one thing without question and without having being asked to. If there were a situation in which you were in danger there is one thing that makes them more special than the rest of us.....they put themselves into HARMS WAY! They keep you, me and millions of other people SAFE!
That is the Point of the British Army!

What is the point of any Army? Lots and lots of eveil people out there. Lets say Britian got rid of its military tomorrow. How long do you think things would stay the same in the UK? I know a neighbor thats very closeby to you folks that would have some demands - right away!

I am shocked and disgusted that such a question should be asked!!! None of you have obviously had any experience about what the army is about and if you have then you must be blind!!!
My dad, brother and my husband are serving in the British Forces at the minute, my husband and my brother both serving in Iraq, putting their lives at risk to protect innocent people and catching killers, terrorists etc
Answer me this question, what would we have done without the army when all the firemen went on strike, our boys were sent back to England (we were in Germany) to cover these flippin petty strikes to save lives!!!!
What would we have done without the army bomb disposal units on 7/7 and in Northern Ireland??? Because 9 times out of 10 it is them that are called to get rid of these suspected packages.
What would other countries have done without army and RAF pilots??? When they deliver humantarian aid to poorer countries??
What would the innocent brits in Lebanon be doing now if the army hadn't flown in to get them and the navy hadn't sailed across to rescue them???
Now ask me what the point of our british army is!!!!!

Without our armed forces we would be bullied by the international community. Our armed forces have made us the country that we are today with influence all over the globe. In modern times they have carried out peacekeeping and disaster relief thereby making the world a better place for millions of people. Why don't you do some research before you ask stupid questions hippy?
