Very nice, I know. Websites are worringly quiet on the subject. I am looking to cover a 1 * 4 metre space. Are there cheaper options, which look at bit the same?

These have caught on here in the midwest like fire. The lite weight concrete mix you can use for this is amazing. Make sure the contractor polishes & seals the counter top . It can be done in any color imagineable or could be acid stained. Ashgrove makes a version of the lite weight concrete and it's only available to contractors.

I very much like using concrete in kitchens, but the problem is that on a counter top, the concrete can't be floated well enough to cure smoothly, hence the need for a sealer. I shy away from anything on a counter in the form of any coating as it's a surface that food comes in contact with.

Certainly there is granite, tile, marble, new composites such as "Corian" etc... All viable as kitchen counter tops. An older, but adequate top is formica, still widely used, inexpensive in comparrison, newer styles can look like stone, etc.

If texture isn't an issue then go with concrete, but another issue will be its absorbency, attracting rate for moisture, mold, debris, dirt, etc.

I saw a wonderful worktop (Countertop) on a cable programme made of concrete. The specialist contractor erected shuttering, cast the concrete, and while in the "green" state dusted it with something and proceeded to hand rub the surface until it was polished very smooth. It took a further 3 days to cure, but the results were fantastic, and was ok for food preparation.

I've never heard of using concrete for a kitchen worktop, if you're dead set on the idea just make a form, strengthen it with some steel rods and make your own.
Concrete is not a suitable surface for food preperation and you'd have to cover it with tiles or something.
