Martin Luther was not the first person to claim that the pope is the anti-Christ. John Wycliffe came to the same conclusion some 200 years before Luther did. Unlike Luther, Wycliffe had everything to loose and nothing to gain from proclaiming this, but he did it anyway because that is what he believed. Let us examine the facts.

What is the beast (the anti-Christ)? It is a religious power that rises out of Europe after the fall of Rome (and 3 of the tribes of the fallen empire are taken out) that acts as sovereign nation. It has much wealth and wants to change the laws of God.

"And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. “(Daniel 7:24 - 25 KJV)

The history of Europe settles the matter. There were 10 kingdoms that formed directly after the fall of Rome. After three kingdoms were taken out (the Vandals, Lombards, and Huns), the "Bishop of Rome" rose to power and formed what we now know as the Roman Catholic Church and this position is now known as the pope. With this power, the pope has changed God's times and laws. Many Christians no longer observe the Sabbath (God's time and God’s law) because the pope has instituted Sunday worship; the Roman Catechism even has a different set of Ten Commandments in it than the Bible's. It is also obvious that this kingdom represented by the little horn is different from all the others. The Vatican is a nation that has great wealth (the little horn wares an expensive crown earlier in Daniel chapter 7) but is very small (like a little horn among big ones) and is wholly ruled by a religious leader unlike any other nation in Europe today. The Vatican is a nation because the USA has an ambassador to the Vatican.

There are even more clues to point to the papal system as being the anti-Christ.

"And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast." (Revelation 13:3 KJV)

The pope was taken out of power and made prisoner (wounded) in 1798 by Napoleon. But, the pope was miraculously healed from his deadly wound in 1929, by Premier Mussolini if Italy who gave the pope all his power back!

The whole world has wondered after the pope. Just look at everyone that attended the funeral of the late John Paul II - leaders of almost every nation in the world!

Also, we find this of the anti-Christ. " And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. (Revelation 13:5 - 6 KJV)

What is blasphemy? "The act of claiming for oneself the attributes and rights of God." (American Heritage Dictionary)

Does the pope blaspheme?

"Against this background of love towards Holy Church, 'the pillar and bulwark of the truth' (1 Tim 3:15), we readily understand the devotion of Saint Francis of Assisi for 'the Lord Pope', the daughterly outspokenness of Saint Catherine of Siena towards the one whom she called 'sweet Christ on earth'" (Pope John Paul II, Apostolic Exhortation VITA CONSECRATA, (On The Consecrated Life And Its Mission In The Church And In The World), March 25, 1996.)

"The Pope is of so great dignity, and so exalted that he is not a mere man, but as it were God. and the vicar of God." (Ferraris Ecclesiastical dictionary)

"All names which in the Scriptures are applied to Christ, by virtue of which it is established that He is over the church, all the same names are applied to the Pope." (On the Authority of the Councils, book 2, chapter 17)

"The Pope and God are the same, so he has all power in Heaven and earth." (Pope Pius V, quoted in Barclay, Chapter XXVII, p. 218, "Cities Petrus Bertanous")

""To believe that our Lord God the Pope has not the power to decree as he is decreed, is to be deemed heretical." (the Gloss "Extravagantes" o.f Pope John XXII *** inter, Tit. XIV, Cap. IV. Ad Callem Sexti Decretalium, Paris, 1685)

I would say he dose! The pope also claimes to be able to forgive sins. The bible clearly says that this is blasphamy.

"Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?" (Mark 2:7 KJV)

I think the papal system matches up with the anti-Christ too much to be a coincidence.

Well I guess you could say it was Emperor Constantine I and the Council of Nicaea.

see Constantine was a pagan sun worshiper but was having trouble with the new Christian cult. they had already burned Rome to the ground one and the in fighting made it look like they would do it again. So Constantine offered the various Church leaders money to agree upon a single canon that would be used by all Christians as the word of God. The Church leaders gathered together at the Council of Nicaea.
The Church leaders didn't finish editing the "holy" scriptures until the Council of Trent when the Catholic church pronounced the Canon closed. However, it seems the real approving editor of the Bible was not God but Constantine! (remember him? the Pagan sun worshiper?)
Well of course this wasn't the first time A pagan commissioned paid for and edited a bible.
The Pharisees of the second temple, after the Jews returned from captivity in Babylon, did the same by the books that now compose the Old Testament.

But as your question is about an anti-Christ one can easily argue it would be the Council of Nicaea who never recorded the word of god but rather voted it into being for finical gain.

I only have a "person of interest" at this time. I'm quite suspicious of Franco Frattini. Now, don't laugh -- hear me out!

Daniel 9:26 tells us he'll be an Italian;
Daniel 7:7-8: he will come out of a revived Roman Empire. The "little horn" is a reference to the Antichrist; the 4th Beast is the revived Roman Empire;
Daniel 7:2: He will be a gentile. The imagery of the sea or ocean is used repeatedly throughout the Bible as being symbolic of gentile nations. The fact all four of the beasts symbolized gentile empires supports this contention;
Daniel 7:8, 7:11 and 7:20: he will have the gift of pursuasive speech. The NKJV reads he will speak "pompous words;" however, the KJV reads he will speak "great things." The Aramaic word in the original text, used in both places, is "rabrab," meaning "great or powerful," so I think the KJV translation is more accurate.
Daniel 8:23: He will have strong features ("fierce" in the NKJV, but this is a mistranslation; the KJV is more accurate) and be so intelligent he will understand complex, misunderstood subjects; this is translated as "dark sentances" in the KJV, but the Aramaic "chiydah " means "difficult questions, riddles or sayings." (Read below for my reasoning how this applies to Frattini)
Daniel 11:21: He will not be of noble blood; he will appear to be a gentle, peaceful person (also verse 24); underneath, he will be quite skilled at intrigue, using his skills to gain power over the earth.
Daniel 11:23: He will act deceitfully and control the earth with a small number of people around him.
Daniel 11:22: Behind the scenes, he will participate in the post-Rapture invasion of Israel mentioned in Ezekiel 38-39.
Daniel 11:37: He will have distain for the "God of his fathers." (See below for more information about Frattini.)

Here's the personal web site of Vice President of the European Commission, Franco Frattini: http://ec.europa.eu/commission_barroso/frattini/index_en.htm Read it, then look at his "Profile" here: http://ec.europa.eu/commission_barroso/frattini/profile/profile_en.htm Note that he is an extremely gifted and attorney who experienced a meteoric rise to his present position; he's councilled some of the most powerful Italian commissions; he's also councilled the Vatican, which some folks think will turn out to be Mystery Babylon; also consider that many folks believe the EU represents the revived Roman Empire. His comments on the front page of his web site prove his strong committment to a unified, centralized European government.

Now read his Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franco_Frattini

He was born in Rome; he comes from a Catholic background, but is a Freemason -- considered by most Christians to be a heretical order -- a fact he tried to keep secret; he was part of the Italian Socialist party, known for its fascist beliefs; he is a wonderful speaker, known for his hard-line approach toward Israel; the similarities go on and on.

I'll add more if I have time.

The antichrist is the world ruler that will come in the form of peace and deceive many after all the Christians are taken to heaven. You can find references in the Bible at:

Matt. 24:24 "For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible."

1John 4:3 "but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world."

Rev. 19:20 20 "But the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who had performed the miraculous signs on his behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped his image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur."

Hope this helps

This word means “against (or instead of) Christ.” It occurs a total of five times, singular and plural, all of them in two of John’s epistles.

The subject was not new among the Christians when John wrote his letters (c. 98 C.E.). First John 2:18 states: “Young children, it is the last hour, and, just as you have heard that antichrist [Gr., an·ti´khri·stos] is coming, even now there have come to be many antichrists; from which fact we gain the knowledge that it is the last hour.” John’s statement shows that there are many individual antichrists, though all together they may form a composite person designated “the antichrist.” (2Jo 7) The use of the expression “hour” as referring to a period of time, either relatively brief or of undetermined length, is exemplified in other writings of John. (See Joh 2:4; 4:21-23; 5:25, 28; 7:30; 8:20; 12:23, 27.) He thus did not restrict the appearance, existence, and activity of such antichrist to some future time only but showed that the antichrist was then present and would continue on.—1Jo 4:3.

Identification. Although there has been much effort in the past to identify “the antichrist” with an individual, such as Pompey, Nero, or Muhammad (this latter person being suggested by Pope Innocent III in 1213 C.E.), or with a specific organization, as in the Protestant view of “the antichrist” as applying to the papacy, John’s inspired statements show the term to be broad in its application, embracing all those who deny that “Jesus is the Christ,” and who deny that Jesus is the Son of God who came “in the flesh.”—1Jo 2:22; 4:2, 3; 2Jo 7, NE, NIV; compare Joh 8:42, 48, 49; 9:22.

Denial of Jesus as the Christ and as the Son of God of necessity embraces the denial of any or all of the Scriptural teachings concerning him: his origin, his place in God’s arrangement, his fulfillment of the prophecies in the Hebrew Scriptures as the promised Messiah, his ministry and teachings and prophecies, as well as any opposition to or efforts to replace him in his position as God’s appointed High Priest and King. This is evident from other texts, which, while not using the term “antichrist,” express essentially the same idea. Thus, Jesus stated: “He that is not on my side is against me, and he that does not gather with me scatters.” (Lu 11:23) Second John 7 shows that such ones might act as deceivers, and hence the “antichrist” would include those who are “false Christs” and “false prophets,” as well as those who perform powerful works in Jesus’ name and yet are classed by him as “workers of lawlessness.”—Mt 24:24; 7:15,

The Anti-Christ does not come on the scene till Christ calls His Christians away. So till then you will not know.

A consideration of 1 John 2:18-19 shows that there are many antichrists, not just one. Also,they are not confined to just one time period, they existed in the days of the apostle John who wrote these words. Since he also mentions that they used to be among Christians but went out from them, it is apparent that antichrists can be anyone, even those who were professed Christians.

Well according to my understanding, the term anti-Christ does not apply to one particular person. It could mean many people. And there are great possiblities that it refers to Muslims. (Sorry no offence).

In this age of fanaticism, do you honestly think that the anti-Christ is going to show himself (hmm, maybe herself? That's a thought huh!) to the general public until it is time? He'd be dead within a week.

No Bible reference, just common sense.

No. The bible doesn't give us a name. He's to be someone very convincing. I can't find it right now. But look in Revelation. The book of Daniel also has many revelations to the end times. Many people think he will come from the Middle east, and many people think he'll be European.
