Society does not follow any of the biblical guidelines below! And if we did, we’d be prosecuted for most of them! (Aside from the fact that some Christian women today still may have their husbands chosen for them by their parents)
1. Marriage consists of one man and one or more women (Gen 4:19, 4:23, 26:34, 28:9, 29:26-30, 30:26, 31:17, 32:22, 36:2, 36:10, 37:2, Ex. 21:10, Judges 8:30, 1 Sam 1:2, 25:43, 27:3, 30:5, 30:18, 2 Sam 2:2, 3:2-5, 1 Chron 3:1-3, 4:5, 8:8, 14:3, 2 Chron 11:21, 13:21, 24:3).
2. Nothing prevents a man from taking on concubines in addition to the wife or wives he may already have (Gen 25:6, Judges 8:31, 2 Sam 5:13, 1 Kings 11:3, 1 Chron 3:9, 2 Chron 11:21, Dan 5:2-3).
3. A man might chose any woman he wants for his wife (Gen 6:2, Deut 21:11), provided only that she is not already another man's wife (Lev 18:14-16, Deut. 22:30) or his [half-]sister (Lev 18:11, 20:17), or the mother (Lev 20:14) or the sister (Lev 18:18) of a woman who is already his wife. The concept of a woman giving her consent to being married is foreign to the Biblical mindset.
4. If a woman cannot be proven to be a virgin at the time of marriage, she shall be stoned (Deut 22:13-21).
5. A rapist must marry his victim (Ex. 22:16, Deut. 22:28-29) - unless she was already a fiancee, in which case he should be put to death if he raped her in the country, but both of them killed if he raped her in town (Deut. 22:23-27).
6. If a man dies childless, his brother must marry the widow (Gen 38:6-10, Deut 25:5-10, Mark 12:19, Luke 20:28).
7. Women marry the man of their father's choosing (Gen. 24:4, Josh.15:16-17, Judges 1:12-13, 12:9, 21:1, 1 Sam 17:25, 18:19, 1 Kings 2:21, 1 Chron 2:35, Jer 29:6, Dan 11:17).
8. Women are the property of their father until married and their husband after that (Ex. 20:17, 22:17, Deut. 22:24, Mat 22:25).
9. The value of a woman might be approximately seven years' work (Gen 29:14-30).
10. Inter-faith marriages are prohibited (Gen 24:3, 28:1, 28:6, Num 25:1-9, Ezra 9:12, Neh 10:30, 2 Cor 6:14).
11. Divorce is forbidden (Deut 22:19, Matt 5:32, 19:9, Mark 10:9-12, Luke 16:18, Rom 7:2, 1 Cor 7:10-11, 7:39).
12. Better to not get married at all - although marriage is not a sin (Matt 19:10, I Cor 7:1, 7:27-28, 7:32-34, 7:38).

Next time you hear someone claim that the Bible supports a “traditional marriage” of one man and one woman, show that person the list and ask which of the guidelines he or she is advocating.

I think we could have some real fun in this country if we went back to the laws of Leviticus! Some Christians seem to want to do that, so it would be quite a hoot!

We could have the Sunday night, state sponsored executions and city-wide stonings of individuals. It would be a real population thinner. Unfortunately, some men might not like having to stone their wives to death for wearing the latest 80% polyester, 20% rayon Gucci miniskirt. But hey, if we're gonna take part of them, we gotta take them all! Right?

(If you didn't detect the irony, please re-read it! Unlike some religious zealots, I don't promote state-sponsored killings.)

you have to keep in mind that the bible was written centuries ago, in a VERY different time and place. People have evolved, our beliefs have have changed, and our ideas of what is right, wrong and acceptable have changed. What has law then doesn't mean that it is the same now. up until the last century it was thought wrong for women to even contemplate sex before marriage, in biblical times you can see it was punishable by death, this is but a small example of how tolerant and accepting society has become today. Even though some religions still look down on women having sex before marriage (roman catholics).

After Christ came, we were no longer under the Old Testament laws. But the laws are used as reference to live by in order to live a moral life. Marriage was meant for reproduction purposes only. Homosexual couples who want legalized marriage only want right to health insurance from their partners employees so they can save money. They can not reproduce on their own, so why have legal marriage? If their partner dies, they should have a will to make sure the other party is taken care of without family members interfering. They can legally change their names to their partners without marriage vows. I am in no way supporting homosexuality. To me it is an abomination. But these people have other options, as I mentioned earlier. The laws that we are still under were brought into the New Testament. Remember the story in the Bible where Jesus saved the adulteress woman? "Let He among you who is without sin cast the first stone." She would have been killed, and it was legal, if Jesus had not stopped them. Read the Bible and let someone who has studied it explain it to you if you can't understand it. And alot of the New Testament verses you mentioned are still practiced in many countries. It is sometimes confusing to me also, but I have faith in God, and try to live the kind of life that God wants.

You won't get much response on this.

The people who are "protecting traditional marriage" aren't really that interested in what the bible says about marriage... their interest is really to prevent equal rights for homosexual marriage. Most of them could care less what the bible really says other than that homosexuality is wrong.

They have been told, they know, they just ignore what they don't want to see. They have eyes to see, but see not, and ears to hear, but hear not. It doesn't matter though. Time will eventually show their bigotry for exactly what it is.

Mandy: In case you haven't noticed, marriage isn't a requirement for procreation. Last year in the United States, more children were born outside of wedlock than were born in... there goes your theory. Nice try, though.

Silly me... and I thought people got married because they loved each other and want to make a public statement of such. I had no idea people only got married for health insurance and to save money. How could I have been so wrong... no, wait, how could you know why other people want to get married? Oh, yeah, somebody else told you and you are just repeating what they said. Nice job.

I think it is a history, as a woman I don't find it offensive. I understand it. It was the way things were. Just as if we were to have a list of things as they are today. It wasn't easy for women back then and still isn't. Modern day revelation has stated marriage is ordained of God and a man shall have one wife. Divorce is allowed but only under conditions of severe abuse or neglect. It doesn't change my belief or respect for God or his son Jesus Christ. One day we will all understand perfectly, hopefully we can have gratitude for the things we have learned from the bible histories.

Looks like you did your research. You have to remember WHEN the Bible was written, though. Women were pretty much considered property then and the concept that they are strong emotional and intelligent beings was never considered. ....let alone respected. Anyone who adheres or believes in these "passages" have got to be sociopaths and totally irreverent, I would have to say. The woman has made her 'mark' in society and in the religious one (unfortunately , not all religions) but, the Bible, as been used by some, to condemn and prosecute women and their natural liberties. The Bible contains many "stories, riddles and sagas" that are unrealistic, fantastic and un-natural....it is up to us , the reader, to make our own life decisions and remember the value of our worth. Thank you for that insightful "harvesting" of information....from our "HOLY"(?) book.

This makes me sick...reading those things, I realize that indeed God is a man as those "rules" are offensive to women and their status is really "a BIG nothing" in this world. Thank God there are still some men who are not that religious, otherwise all of us (women) would end up being husband's slaves in 21st century.

Your facts are skewed and your knowledge of the history of the Bible is immature at best.

This will take way too long to explain to you, perhaps you should go and actually read some of what you've cut and pasted.
