you are right, we are hypocritical we want women to be independent and want our youth educated about all subjects but talking about a natural part of being a woman is considered as you said taboo. The stigma of menstruation is still with us, that is why there are pills now that let women have periods only a few times a year, stupid to my way of thinking.

I do not believe that the word Taboo still holds the weight it once did, we call things taboo, but this was once a word which associated with being cursed or ostricized if the line was crossed. Now we just get a bit of a telling off. However, the great Taboos of our time seem to be less sexual, and more related to belief and religion and race. I have met people who will laugh at a joke about child abuse but not at a joke which they find racist. We have become so individualised in our lives that there do not seem to be any unifying beliefs anymore. It seems that which is beautiful and uplifting is very often condemned, whilst violence and greed is promoted wholesale. Personally I think everyone should have sex as a hobby, I may put it on my next CV. Love you.

Some things are private and always will be. There is a time and place for everything, and with a little respect for ourselves and those around us we will know where and when.... For example if I am in the company of other mothers and their children, I am not going to have a conversation about my menstruation or sexual problems. Common sense prevails or should. That is not to say that these topics should not be discussed they are openly and frequently. I just wonder why you have a problem with these and think that they are taboo - they're not - but private matters should be dealt with properly in the right company at the right time.

Menstruation is only "taboo" as a topic of discussion in some social situations. If you are with a gang of vampires, or hanging out at a medical convention, it is perfectly appropriate.
Taboo depends on the setting. There is an appropriate setting for almost any topic. Go find the setting where your chosen topic is acceptable. QED
No problem.

Your question has nothing to do with taboos. It has to do more with decency and self respect. For instance, it is indecent to fill in sex in place of hobbies, because it paints u as an indecent person, while the women cringe to discuss menstruation openly for reasons ranging from the pains associated with it, and the need to have chaste, decent conversations.

In this day and age, why AREN'T there taboos? In case you haven't noticed, the level of society has been severely diminished in the last few decades. A lot of that is due to the opening of "taboos" and the reduction in the feeling of SHAME. Why do you think it is acceptable to talk about menstruation? Why do you think anyone else wants to talk about it?

To be honest, me and my friends have no taboos, last friday we were at the pub, and we talked about masturbation, sex, names for our penises/vagina's and sex, all of this was done in an adult way and there was no childishness or anyone saying "you cant say that".
think that it is sad that some people are so anal and repressed that they cant even talk about there sexual fantise, or tossing. but it will take a few more generations for everyone to be that open im sure.
(though we didnt talk about menstruation as it was 4 blokes and one girl)

In real life it is fine to have conversations about these things but I think it is inviting troble to do so on the internet. There are kids on here and there are sick individals everywhere. The anonimity on here creates an environment where it is easy to talk smut and these topics make some people very nervous so they respond in a very child like way.

Taboos are like fences - they are there to be climbed over :) It's like someone breaking a world record for distance running - once a few people do it, loads of people suddenly realise they can do it too :) Some people like have boundaries and fences, but everyone's boundaries are different. So it's like we live inside a square fence inside a square fence inside a square fence.... we're prepared to knock some of them down and widen our comfort zone but we all have the point beyond which we won't go!

Taboos are just generalizations on things that the average person isn't comfortable talking about. Regardless of generation there will always be taboos of one form or another.
