I recently adopted my first puppy, a feisty male Boston terrier. He is 12 weeks old now and this morning when I took him out for his usual 6:00 am elimination, it came out as diarrhea. I looked in a couple of dog books I have and they didn't really give me a clear indication of what to do. About half an hour later, puppy had an accident on the kitchen floor (I should have known he wanted to go out but didn't catch the signals) which was also diarrhea. I have been looking at differnet website for an answer as to what I should do and have found different opinions. Some say to have the puppy fast from food and water for 12 hours. Others say to take him to the vet immediately. Our vet doesn't open for a few more hours and I'm wondering what I should do between now and when I ask the vet what to do. One thing I have found is that I must do something about this before he becomes dehydrated. You're looking at one worried mama! Oh, and he is just as energetic as usual.

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone for their answers. I came home from work to check on the puppy around 2:30. He finally went and still had diarrhea, so I called our vet. She said that 95% of their calls today have been about puppies with diarrhea. The cause? A recent heatwave! It's been around 100 degrees for the past few days, including today. Even though my puppy is an indoor dog (we just go out for the bathroom and to go for walks) just the short amount of time in the heat (and humidity) has caused him to be sick. I was told to take away his water until dinner time; I should give it back at dinner along with 1/3 of his usual amount of kibble. I'm supposed to give him just a little snack before bed. She said if he becomes lathargic and if it continues to call them again. I also got an emergency number in case he gets worse after they close or over the weekend.

Oh, I forgot the other detail. She said that he shouldn't have parvo since he's had two sets of his shots already. (He's due for his booster a week from tomorrow.)

It is now 11:00 pm and the puppy is back to normal! I fed him his dinner around 6:30, and then a snack around 9:30. We went outside to potty around 10:00 and everything seems to be back to normal.

A puppy with diarrhea isn't usually something to worry about. I would only be concerned if there was blood in the stool, the puppy wasn't eating or drinking, and/or the puppy wasn't acting right. You can check if they are dehydrated by pulling the skin above their shoulders. It should snap back right away. If it doesn't or does very slow then they are dehydrated and should be taken to the vet for care. I would suggest buying some rice/lamb wet food to give them. It's more gentle on the stomach and gives them some extra water. Make sure to have them checked for worms too if they haven't been dewormed. Hope this helps!

Congratulations on your new puppy. First off you should look at any dietary changes. If the person/place you adopted the pup from was feeding him one thing and you suddenly changed what he was used to to another brand, it could upset his system. It that is the case, gradually add a little more of your food to the other brand until he is eating all of the kind you serve.
Do not deny the pup water, as he could dehydrate. Offer him a little dry food. Fasting at that age is not good.Small dogs can get hypoglycemia.Take him outside 20 minutes after eating. Definitely take the lil' guy to the vet. Has he been wormed or had some puppy shots yet?It is good he is energetic & not lathargic. Keep an eye on him. Watch for bloody or black looking diahrrea with a foul odor. Notice if his eyes look slightly sunken near the top of the muzzle or depressed. Parvo Virus is easy to get and the onset can happen overnight. I've seen puppies that have been playful one day and die the next. More than likely it is just something he ate, but be sure to get him in to see your local Veterinarian. In the unfortunate event he has been exposed to it, it can be treated if caught in enough time. Good Luck and Best wishes for your new puppy.

He could be cutting new teeth and that could be the problem. My puppy did the same thing when getting new teeth. The best way to help until the vet opens is to give him some boiled beef or chicken mixed with a little cooked rice. The vet will probably give you something for the diarreha. Don't worry to much since he still quite active. If he were really sick he wouldn't want to play. Just remember that he'll be just fine.

Don't give any food, just water, and lots of it. It could be nothing, just a change of food, enviorment or nerves. Could also be worms. However, puppies dehydrate very quickly, and I don't know where you live, but the heat right now can make it worse. Twice with new puppies, I went thru this, one time it was worms, and other time it must've been the food, cuz I was stupid and didn't give her was she had been getting, and immediately changed over her food. If possible, get a stool sample to bring to the vet (yup, even gross diarrhea) and they can check for worms, parasites, ect. Good Luck.

It may take awhile before he looses his energy but it will happen because his body is being depleted of alot of liquid and possibly essential vitamins that this virus/? is passing through his system. With puppy's you have to be careful, especially when you buy them from someone you do not know. Puppy's can get sick with "parma" and if not treated can die from it. If it continues for more than 6 hours I would take him to the vet. But for now just observe him. He may have just eaten something he shouldn't have. Remember do not give animals human food, it's basically like torture although they may think they want it, their stomach's are not equipped to handle it and it will cause them to be sick or have diarrhea. Good luck, hope he feels better soon.

Take him to the vet as soon as possible (today) Pups dehydrate very fast. Do you not have an emergency vet you could call? Allow him water! But hold off on the food till you get himto the vet this morning. Good luck.

Her dogs foodstuff or the foodstuff plan you've been feeding her may be lacking some thing that her body needs, and her body has now stumbled on that interior the rice. Or, once you've at present replaced her foodstuff over to a sparkling kind or diverse kind it ought to reason this. possibly attempt blending some rice with somewhat dogs foodstuff. Make a vet appointment only in case to be sure, she probably only needs a extra proper foodstuff plan or a nutrition.

Abrupt diet changes can cause this. Are you feeding what he was getting before you got him?
Worms can cause this. Take a stool sample to the vet and have it checked for worms.
Many diseases can cause this. Has he had his puppy shots? Also puppy shots can cause this.

take your dog to the vet ASAP. I had a dog with similar problems, and it turned out he had contracted the Parvo Virus, which is fatal. Fortunately he survived, but it was very close.
