no, not a good idea. Why don't you sit down and chat with her- be her friend. Girls that age are only looking for attention (male attention too) . You need to give her that attention. Be the prince in her life until she meets the right guy one day.

Sorry about the long story, but...
Here's what happened to me... My 9 year old daughter likes to go to websites to play games. I have went over all of the rules prior to letting her use the Internet. She found one website that has a game room/ chat room, and I had no clue she was on it until she poked her head around the corner and asked, "Mommy, is it okay to give this girl my phone number?" "What!?!" was the only thing I could say. I ran to the computer and informed the chat room that her mother is now in control of the situation and NO ONE is to ask for ANY personal information. The "girl," (and you never really know who they are chatting with) who asked for my daughter's phone number, called me an a** hole... I grounded my daughter from the computer, and explained, again, why personal info. should not be given out.
But if you know some good kids in the neighborhood, you can give your daughter a Yahoo Messenger account. Make sure it is set right so that only people on her list (the ones you designate) may send instant messages. Set the archives so that all messages are saved so you can review them later to make sure that nothing inappropriate is said. Always know what her password is. Hope this book that I am writing helped, LOL.

I would think very carefully about exposing my 9 year old daughter to a chat room. If she has friends who use the chat room and they can do so in private then I might be okay with it, but you may have to be prepared to watch over her shoulder as there are people out there who are not what they pretend to be, and it is pretty easy to jump out of a private chat into the mainstream, and kids love to explore. Personally, I don't think that I would be prepared to risk it. Good luck with your decision.

Never, not so young. I know she will say "all her friends are doing it" but my husband has already reported people he feels were looking for young girls and boys on this site. I do have one recommendation, you are getting to the "birds and bees" stage with her. I don't want to scare her, but I am saving this movie for my daughter when she gets older. Show her the movie "kids", it's mindblowing and hopefully it will keep her away from dating for sometime. Try to remember the 15 year old girl that chatted online then caught a flight to Isreal, I know your daughter is only nine, but it's only a few years away.

First ask yourself this question: "Have I imbibed cultural and ethical values in my lovable daughter?" If you answer honestly and say yes, then go ahead and allow your daughter to chat on the net. But do keep a watch as she is going to enter that 'difficult' age. Just keep a check, do not prod or interfere.

NO, please trust me. You can give your daughter all the rules you want, but she'll end up slipping up and giving info she shouldn't. Even if she doesn't give personal information, whoever she's chatting with can say anything at all to her at anytime! Don't put your daughter in danger, it's like putting her in a room full of sickos.
